I recently have been browsing this forum and it has helped me out tremendesly. I recently was inherited a boat and Iam trying to figure out what kind of electrical system i have. I have posted a few pictures to show everyone whats going on in the boat. The boat has 2 batteriers a house and starter battery. I wanted to know some info on the fuses and switchs panel i have. My plan is to update the electrical system with a new switch panel, LED lights inside the boat, and a cd player/radio. Can someone explain to me how my setup is working. Iam a beginner at his and have bought a few books.

I'm not sure what you are asking. You have a standard 12 volt system.

I wanted to post more pics but I wouldn't allow me too. But aim basically asking for a complete picture of my electrical system. As you can see the wiring looks very sloppy and I would like to make it neat and add a fuse panel so I can have all the wires going to one spot.

Re: I need help with electrical system(with pictures)

it doesnt look all the bad for boat wiring and can be repaired easy the question is what do you want it to do.

make a list of what you have already.
make a list of what you want and the reason you want it.

a example would be: i want fuel/rpm/battery meters (new). i want two batteries one to be used the other as a back-up. i want a upgraded fuse panel thats easy to use. i do not want to have to climb on my hands and knees inside the back of the unit to get to the fuses. i want a radio. i want a huge amp with 20' base speakers.....etc

the people on here can take what you like and dislike and work out most of the problems before you start like battery draw/ cable size/ panel design etc. also look on this web site at the fuse panels etc as i would surgets a nice switch panel with fuses in the front panel so theres no crawling around looking for a blown fuse under the dash while floating in a shipping lane.

You may be limited (It's a spam thing, sorry) to the number of images you can post being new here (only 3 posts) after 3 or maybe 5 posts you should be able to post 5 images per reply, if you have more, then reply to your original post to add 5 more images.

Re: I need help with electrical system(with pictures)

If you have two batteries currently, you need to check for a dual battery switch (has an OFF-BAT1-BOTH-BAT2 dial, or an isolator, or an Automatic Charge Relay (ACR). Any of those would be needed to charge both batteries. If the two batteries are simply connected in parallel, then all you have is the equivalent of one very large battery. We need details to be of any help. It appears you don't know what the switches do that you currently have. Without you telling us how they are labeled, we can't help you. What make, age and size engine is on this boat? Pictures of wires don't mean much unless you show the batteries, fuse/breaker panel, etc.

So, what motor do you have, and what is the charge rate? Limited could mean different things to different people.

Re: I need help with electrical system(with pictures)

Yea I been trying to post all the pics of all the equipment but it won't let me, but I do have a dual battery switch with 2 batteries. Also have fuse panel with about 5 slots. The engine is a 2002 yamaha 130. What I would like to do is upgrade my fuse panel and switches. Also add a radio/cd player and colored LED lights. And also like new battery/fuel/rpm meters.
The switches that are currently hooked up are the interior lights, bilge pump and spot lights. The gauges are fuel rpm and I think volts.

Just add pictures to your newest replies, and not the original post.

Is that a 2 stroke 130 or a 4 stroke?

Re: I need help with electrical system(with pictures)

There seems to be two issues you need resolved but you've sort of beat around the bush with the questions: As I understand it you want the following:

1) Theory of operation for the electrical system. So here goes: Your boat has TWO electrical systems (not two circuits). One system is related to the engine, the throttle/shift control box, and the instruments. The other is the BOAT system. It is what powers all other accessories on the boat. HOWEVER, you have a dual battery switch so the above description basically applies to a single battery system. Since we have no idea who wired the switch or how it is wired, we also have no idea how it functions on your boat. But here is how it SHOULD be wired and how it would TYPICALLY be used.

StandardBatterySwitchWiring.jpg

The switch has an OFF position: Obviously, if that position is selected BOTH batteries are disconnected so as to prevent battery discharge while away from the boat.
BAT #1: Battery #1 starts the engine, the engine charges ONLY that battery, and that battery runs ALL accessories as they would be/should be connected tot he COM terminal on the switch. BAT #2 is merely along for the ride.
BAT #2: Works the same as BAT #1 except BAT #2 is now doing the work. BAT #1 is along for the ride.
BOTH: Both batteries are tied together in parallel and both can start the engine, both are being charged and both are powering all
of the accessories. The switch is like a traffic cop -- it simply directs which battery(ies) is to be used. This subject has been beat to death so use the SEARCH feature to learn about WHEN to use the various settings. But as the ad on TV says -- "It's really not that difficult". If your boat has some "creative" switch wiring you will need to sort that out yourself. However, all accessories including the feed for the fuse panel should be wired to the COM terminal on the switch. About the only thing that wouldn't be is an automatic bilge pump. You want that to run if you are away from the boat so it gets wired directly to BAT #2.

2) Upgrade the electrical system. This is a little vague as adding a CD/Radio and some interior lights is not an upgrade to the electrical system. It is adding accessories to the boat. If you need more switches then add them. If you want new instruments, add them.
If you begin to play with wiring, don't make the mistake of NOT MARKING WIRES or you will be back here for another wiring 101 lesson.
You already have a tach. If you want to replace it buy whatever you like. Wiring is the same unless you currently have a tach with other built in features such as hour meter, oil, temp and other indicators. Then you need the engine-specific tach. A battery meter is a voltmeter which you also already have. Bolt in the new one and swap the wires. You already have a fuel gauge. Bolt in the new one and swap the wires.

Fuse panels come in many forms with any number of fuse slots. Buy what you want and replace it. Buy one with a built in ground bus to avoid having ground wires running all over the place.

You can add as many switches as you wish. Buy what lights your fire. Here is a typical switch wiring diagram. The light can be any device of your choosing. Electricity doesn't care what it's powering.

Re: I need help with electrical system(with pictures)

I'm basically doing the same project as you are. Seemed pretty overwhelming at first, but once you break the problem down into pieces, it's not really that complicated. My boat's wiring was a complete rat's nest with random jumpers and splices going everywhere....so I mapped it all out and now am in the process of ripping it out and rewiring everything.

The first thing I'd do is take an inventory of all your electrical components (batteries, switches, electronics, etc). And then create a wiring diagram to plan out how you are going to power everything. I've attached my diagram below (take it for what its worth, because I'm still on the steep slope of the learning curve).

There's a ton of great material on this site.

I also found this 14 part article on boat wiring incredibly helpful

Good luck

He's done exactly that, and I made a wiring diagram for him for a complete rewire, he just never came back to update any of his threads after he got the diagrams.

He gave me a list of what he wanted, and this is what I made for him.
