I am trying to replace my lower unit on a 115. Do I need to get the lower unit in neutral and if so how do I do that? Ive turned the spindle both ways as far as it goes and seems to be in forward no matter what. Also I changed the impeller as it has been sitting for 7 years. Does it need to be taken apart any more and gone through?

Ok now i can shift the lower unit from f to n to r.But i get it about two inches from bolting up and it gets stuck. I am getting the water tube lined up and the shift linkage is starting on the shaft on the lower unit. What else could be hanging up.

Try turning the flywheel by hand a bit to help the crankshaft and driveshaft splines engage.

Warning make sure the ign is off and spark plug wires off the spark plugs before turning the flywheel!

Also make sure the control box is in the same gear (or neutral) as is the lower unit.

Re: I need help with replacing lower unit

I like to turn the drive shaft on the lower unit myself. But, I also have the battery disconnected, Everything in neutral, key removed, dog in the house, wife on the couch. Just want to be sure it's safe.
BTW, it usually only takes a tiny bit of a turn. I can usually do it just by wiggling the lower unit, like I was trying to steer the boat, while I'm lifting it into position.
