I have a 50 hp Johnson 1977 model pull rope start. Model# 50 RL77D. The motor runs perfect and I want to convert it froma rope start to electric start. Can I use the fly wheel and attach an electric starter. I don't really care if it charges the battery as I am using a 27 series Optima and it won't run down in a days use. I see flywheels on ebay all the time but don't know what to get. I know there's a way I can do this to make it work. Any body got some ideas to direct me in the right direction? I do know the electric starter will bolt up directly to where the rope starter mechinism is located now. The biggest issue I can see is the teeth on the flywheel currently look much smaller and have more teeth than the 8,9,10 tooth bendix I see on most starters. I figured I would have to swap flywheels out, but didn't know if that will affect the timing on the engine, stator operation, etc. Any ideas on what I can do is greatly appreciated . My email is EDIT Thanks again Glynn

Re: I need some advice ASAP!

Seems like you could, I doubt they made a special block for a rope start engine but it will involve alot more than a flywheel, you need a solenoid, starter, key switch and I am sure alot of other electrical bits to make it work.

The charge for the ignition comes from the flywheel so you would have to get the right one.

So I am sure you can do it but what all is involved I don't know.

Normally one can get a good idea of what is involved by checking out the accessories in the parts list to see if an electric starter kit is/was available for the model.

BUT not only is there nothing mentioned in the accessories section but the main BRP parts list don't even list the model.

If your flywheel is one with teeth round the rim I'd expect to see a starter kit that would fit it without changing it. Drawn a blank I am afraid

You'll need the starter motor, the solenoid and the mounting bracket for the motor plus all the wiring.
You'll be able to make up your own wiring, the solenoids are pretty standard but you'll need the bracket and motor to fit. At the moment no clues as to what they might be.

cannot locate this model # Model# 50 RL77D, in US, references. the did not build a 50 hp in 1977. it may have been built in one of the out of country plants. look for made in Belgium, Australia, Canada on the label.
