The clips are designed to take the weight of the drive. When the clips take the weight you relieve the pressure on the hydraulics. If you don't "pinch" them your really missing the point of using them. I also use a small line to attatch the two just incase one might pop off, however once the weight is borne by them...it would take quite a jolt to detach.

I never bother lowering the drive on the clips. I have a short piece of line that attach the two(through the supplied holes) to keep them together so I don't lose them and to keep from losing one if it happens to fall off.

There are 2 flavors of clips. The style I have simply slip down over the ram pistons and can fall off if not pinched by lowering the drive. The other style actually "clip" onto the ram pistons, so you don't necessarily need to lower the drive to keep them in place. Most of them that I've seen (or found on the side of the road :D) are the slip on style.

I use trailing clips always have. I wrap a bungee cord around them also to keep them secure if they become loose. The old Mercruiser sterndrives had a metal bracket that came with them...wish the new ones still had that.

Mine fasten on pretty firmly. No way they are coming off by bouncing.
