I pulled the flywheel on my 1980-83 40HP merc thunderbolt Ig. serial 5992846. The inside edge of the flywheel where the magnets contact there is a heavy layer of rust and possibly paint, Is that suppose to be smooth and clean to the Metal?. Also are the magnets supposed to be on the flywheel? when I pulled to flywheel they were attached to the stater, they are also cracked. Would this be a cause in the Inconsistant spark I am dealing with?. Thanks for any help

Magnets should be attached to the flywheel.Yes this will cause inconsistent spark or no spark.Sounds like you need a new flywheeel.
