First thing is I got in a hurry and screwed up. I took the starter off of my 77 johnson 35 so I could rebuild the carb (whole other story) and when I put everythting back together I mistakenly hooked up the ground (the one that is supposed to connect to the starter) to the starter solenoid. It smoked the ground in a big hurry. I realized what i did, repaired the ground, and it started right up. However, the next day it won't turn over so I start checking things and find the blown fuse. replaced it and it immediately blows again. It actually cranked the starter (but wouldn't start) after several fuse replacements but it now just blowing them as soon I turn the key. I've checked all the other wires as best i can and couldn't find anything unusual. I cleaned up and replaced the ground again but no luck. Any idea where to start for diagnosing this problem?

Check the rectifier for damage. Sometimes that short, sometimes they open. Next check wires that were next to or crossed the grund wire you smoked. The heat of the ground melting will melt wires that touch and cause them to short.
