Well I'll be the first to answer this thread. But other like Yatch Dr and Opps Need to shime in. They are the experts.

You have a descision to make. If you want to use it again, you have alot of work on your hands. If you don't then start emptying and get rid of it. But make sure you tell who every you give it to that there is rot and hull damage. This needs to be fixed and properly before any more outings. I suspect you have string damage on top of youhull damage.

You are looking at a large project for anyone, especially if you never done this kind of work before.

Just my opinion......

Re: I think i broke my boat

You might want to post over on the restoration and hull repair forum. Some of the more experienced structural guys hang out there. I'm no expert, but from the pictures it looks like you have some pretty severe rot in the wood that's visible. Based on that, you may have some structural issues with some of the wood in the structural portions of the hull (such as stringer cores and transom).

The guys on the restoration forum can give you a better idea of what you've got going on, and what you need to do to make sure your boat is safe.

Good Luck

Re: I think i broke my boat

thx guys, im freaking now.so, this stuff was already pretty much there, and now its more apparent. i think the wood rotted in that area, because thats where that acess door is. Cause the rest of the floor in that area is really solid. At least it feels that way. So if the stringers were sealed properly, they might not be rotted. right? maybe? please?
Thanks, i will check out the other forum. i was following Bisson's resto. Wow!! splitting the boat in half!!! very impessive.

Re: I think i broke my boat

Thanks, but with your boat you should not have to do that. You should have access to all the areas.

Your next step is discovery, start ripping apart the areas and find out what is actually wrong. I would cut with either a skill saw or a saw-z-all. Make sure you do not cut thru the boat hull. Even though you are fixing one area already. If you do it's just one more area to fix. But I would start with the floor. Take all the carpet off that is one color. Hard to make color on old stained carpet. Then cut out the floor piece around the perimeter with the saw and pry it out. Only score/cut thru the top surface of fiberglass, about a 1/4". Not the wood. The remove the wood piece if you can if not then recut thru the wood. Start where you know there is rot. And keep ripping it out. When you get to the end off the rot, then you will know what your plan is. If you are going to fix the boat, or scrap it. Can't sell a boat with issue without disclosing it, or you are looking for other problems.

But with this investigation you are not out anything other then your labour. If you decide not to do the work yourself, at least it will reduce the cost of some one else labour. And you are opening up the area for a better quote. They will be able to see what is wrong and what needs to be fix. No hidden areas to worry about.

Also another hint. As you remove sections of wood. Cut cardboard patterns for future reference of the pieces you are going to need to remove. If you get the section out whole then don't get rid of them untill you replace them in the boat. It will atleast give you a rrough size.

Lastly, don't cut out too much with out bracking the hull. Even if it is rotted, some of it is giving it structure. More across the boat. You might need to add a few 2x4's for cross boat and up down. The tops are a bit heavy and will sag a hull out.

Hope this helps.

Re: I think i broke my boat

Boat is being looked at today, or sun. Thanks for the tips, any info is welcome. Im a carpenter, so ripping and replacing wood isnt a prob, its just getting to everything. If it is determined that the floor is all gone, i guess that means removing kitchen unit, benches,etc...but the sleeping area floor, is right on top of the gas tank, so even if i cut that out, how would i get to anything else under that? I dont think it is that far gone. It only has 600 hrs on the whole boat. It has sat most of its life. But i know even if sitting, which is sometimes worse for things, and the wood was getting wet, it would rot.
Again, im thankfull for the info.
And I just want to say, that i would never sell something that was not safe. I would junk it first. anyway, just want something for little outings. Not going in ocean, not going far, just a little fishing and cruising.

Well don't keep us in suspense. What was wrong with it? Keep posting and give us an outcome from the inspection.

Re: I think i broke my boat

Emotional is right. My girlfriend has been like, what is wrong with you? She said whatever is wrong,we will fix it. I just felt bad that i ruinned something that we worked very hard on to get it running and in the water.
Anyway, a guy we know who used to work in a boat yard, and has seen a lot of damaged boats, and has owned and fixed boats with rotted floors and such, said it wasn't bad. The outside cracks were just the gel coat, and not all the way thru, so a fill, or a patch that goes over the crack, and then u sand it down, is all that will be. He said matching the paint is the hardest part, but believe me, we are not worried about that. He checked under the boat, and did hit, or sound tests, and everything was fine. Then i showed him inside.Yes,the parts that did split, have some rot in those areas. He said it was up to me how far i wanted to rip and patch. He said the stringers were fine, and that the boat, for her age, was fine. The weight from the kitchen unit, was prob most of the reason, that the floor split like that. The back area, that is on top of the gas tank, can be pressed back down, and glassed over.
So, i feel better that i know the boat is safe, but there is work to be done to replace the bad wood. That will have to be next years project. I winterized, and tarped her up for the winter.
Thanks for all the info and tips, that i will be using. You guys with this know how, are a really big help to us first timers. thanks again.

Re: I think i broke my boat

I am happy for you that it turned out good.Feels nice huh?
You could think of it this way;If you had not slammered that wave(do not do that again) and cracked your floor open,You would never had known you had rot....
One little thing concerning the rot..Rot travels, even when the wood looks fine it can still have rot in it..You just dont see it(yet)So whenever you start replacing my advice would be do a good job and replace the whole thing..You wont have to worry about it ever...
Regards i mike

I'm very glad it wasn't the worst case scenario. Sounds like a not too horrific repair process.

Glad to hear your main structure is OK. It sounds like everything else is your standard "old boat project" type of situation.

Good luck

Re: I think i broke my boat

Glad to hear it. I hope you post the project hear when you get into it. We all like projects, especially when we don't have to work on them, and even more when we don't have to pay for them!

But seriously, good news then. When you do get into it, make sure you look at that gas tank's mounting. They should not move at all! Let alone bounce and crack a floor. Wouldn't want it bouncing and flex crack on you. That's alot of gas to be sloshing around in the bottom of a boat.

Re: I think i broke my boat

Man, I have to say, or to rephrase, ask! How does your friend know that the stringers are ok? Don't know about what others think, but my advice is to open her up and see if the structure is still good. There have been many boats over the years that showed no signs of damage like yours until they dugg into them and found a broken stringer.

Now, that being said, those same boats probably boated for years with that same broken stringer.

Just saying, it is up to you what risk you are willing to take. The wrong time to figure out you have worse problems than you thought, is while your on the water. Does not matter wether you are 2 miles of shore or 30 miles offshore, the results can be the same.

I would at the very least cut the area out that is damaged and investigate further. Just my .02

What did you hit really? This damage is not common! :(

Re: I think i broke my boat

Thanks guys for the advice. I like the, " we all like projects when we don't have tp work on them or pay" LOL. I hear ya.
Knowing me, I will probably dig deeper into it, because i try to make everything perfect, and like some say, the damage might have already been there, just not as apparent.
In answer to chriscraft, he checked the hull by sound. Going around and tapping, and feeling the bounce back. And, i hit a double wake off of two oncoming boats.
Next year, i will address the rot in the floor, and check below more.
