I have a bayliner 'capri' w/ force 85 i/o. i changed the power head w/ a 125hp from an outboard and installed a new exhaust manifold. my problem is water getting into the #4 cyl.(bottom) when the boat is out of the water w/ standard water clamp hose setup. need to find out about any tests/checks to do as well as any plausable scenarios.can someone please help me.

Only test I can think of is to check the compression, and maybe find out if its the head gasket or the exhaust plate gasket that is doing the leaking.

Other than that, replace the 2 exhaust gaskets.

If that doesn't do it, replace the head gasket.

I'd be real interested to hear what you find out.
Please post back, as this will help others in the future.

Re: i think i messed up exaust manifold

i have since removed the powerhead from the I/O and removed the exhaust manifold from the block. what i found was that the ports did not line up correctly (i.e. the block has a row of water jacket openings of about an inch on each side of the common 4 cyl. exhaust outlet while the exhaust manifold has one side with 2 inch water jacket openings with everything else matching up perfectly. water from the jacket was able to flow, greatly, into the exhaust gases chamber and into the bottom cyl. this is a 2 stroke) note i was not around when this was put together and this should have been noticed at that time. what i need is an adapter plate between the block and manifold which blocks the 'extra' inch on the one side. will probably have to custom fab. this piece.

you'll have to be more specific with years and models. The spacer plate for an '88 85HP is identical to an '88 125HP. For those two engines the swap you did should have been a drop-in replacement.

you can browse through here until you find models and years that exactly match your past and present engines.
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=FORC
