The people Block hires are off the street. They get a few hours training at night, and then off to the desks. All they do is fill out the forms and send them out to be checked. I have a CPA do mine for $125 a year.

That's my impression of how it is up here. My MIL worked for H&R for a couple seasons. Although she may have been reasonably competent, she had no experience/training other than a short prep course when she was hired. Just a retired teacher looking for something to do. Certainly no particular insight into taxes. Either she fired because she was too slow in doing returns, or she quit because she didn't like feeling pressured to work faster... I don't remember.

My overall impression is that these places are not much different than payday loan companies... prey off the naive. I'm sure they have a lot of one-time customers.

Jeeze, and I thought $250 was pretty bad. I hate tax prep companies. They are only out to screw you and they aren't even that good. It is still possible to get in trouble with the IRS after doing your taxes with them. I'm relieved that tax season is finally over.
