I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

Good Morning folks,

I recently found a vehicle on E-bay that I was interested in for purchase to use as a 4-wheeler essentially on the back 80 acres for firewood cutting, etc. Called the owner, asked if the 4 wd worked, and he stated it did, just had some 'squeaks and rattles'... and the title would need some work. When I inquired about 'what kind of work', he said it was ripped and torn, and he acquired the vehicle for lack of payment for some work that he did.

Long story short -- the guy SEVERELY misrepresented the vehicle... The dash was gone, the 4 wd worked in lo, not high, but you had to 'wire-nut' the wiring together to get it to work. :D I called an under-sheriff friend of mine, and gave him the specifics on the title work... and it appeared to him that the previous owner could report the vehicle as a stolen ride and could cause all sorts of headaches... When I questioned the guy, he grew very irritated and rude -- so I decided to take my rented trailer for hauling it and go back home.

Now I see he's relisted the item with the same photos, only this time, bashing me and apparently another buyer that stopped out and was scared away by his mis-information. Something about 'I'm sick of people wanting to show up on my door-step and go out for a ride on MY GAS...'

Yes, I had nothing better to do than take off work, rent a trailer, drive 3 hours there and back with my 8 year old 20k mile truck to take a piece of junk for a spin. I really feel the guy lives so far in the middle of nowhere, he's desperate to have someone show up on his door step. No phone reception, back out of the driveway for 1/4 mile... all I could think is... "They're never gonna find my body." :D

Ebay seems to have grown more expensive with the fees (when it's sold.), and then when you run into stuff like this... it makes it even more frustrating.

Am I all alone in feeling this way? When I sell something (as I did this week) I want to make the new owner feel comfortable, and when it's all done... I want to have a friend in them. I recently sold an old tractor -- and the new owner wasn't liking the steering of the 65 year old machine. I drove up to his home, gave him is money back, and drove the tractor back home. I'd rather make sure there's not any issues between us than try to make a buck. 'Course, I have way more friends than money...

...And way more moral values than most.

I won't even get started on honor, integrity, and value as a member of society today...

I'll just get my own "hackles" up and cause myself the need to go run a few miles just to bring my blood pressure back down to a healthy level.

Unfortunately, what you've described is the sad norm today.

People such as many an iboat member, are like a breath of fresh air in the midst of a toxic environment.

Find solace in the attitudes of the people whom make a positive impact on your life.
That being said, I hear ya, man!!! There are some pretty crappy people out there. Don't allow youself to be completely turned off to ebay just because of the actions of some... There are a lot of really terriffic sellers on ebay.

Don't just pay attention to percentages of feedback. Plenty of "other than" good sellers and buyers have 100% positive feedback with only a few or several sales/purchases.

Those who would profit by the misfortune of others, especially those causing the misfortune, are a large part of what makes good people seek out one another.

I don't like the idea of judging others; but let's face it, it's a necessarry act of self preservation. That being said; I learned at a very early age, that the best way to judge a person... is by the company they keep.;)

Oh you again.
Quit your lying and whining.
There is nothing wrong with my truck or its title, but I wouldn't sell it to you now for triple the price.
Don't you ever set foot on my property again.

Just kidding. (It wasn't me, I have phone reception.)

I feel your pain.

Been there, done that.

You GOT me. My heart sank when I read the first half of your post. Good one.

I try to teach honest and TRUE integrity in all we do to my kids. I even felt sick driving away, as I told the guy I would take it provided it was what he told me it was... I still feel guilty about not taking it -- The vehicle having things wrong with it, believe it or not -- didn't bother me. However, the lying to me about how far away it was off the beaten path, the several other 'convenient mistruths' (2 wd works, 4 wd works -- didn't say anything about 4 hi, etc.)... but when I called my cop buddy -- he said to leave it sit since the way everything read -- the one owner could come back for it. She didn't release anything from her name. I'm wanting to do the right thing, but also don't really need a police friend stop out and try to change my residence.

I was done with ebay years ago. Paypal too.
the last straw for me was some years ago I ordered a speaker set, the seller shipped me 2 or maybe 3 of the 5 speakers, not shipping the mains which are the most expensive. I filed a complaint with ebay and despite the fact I provided the shipping label weight and the manufacturers listed weight for the set showing a large difference, because he shipped "something" I lost the claim and saw no $ back.

Actually, there are a couple of sellers left with a little integrity.

Won an auction for a cheap little knife last week. Bear and Sons, made right here in Alabama. Paid all of $7.00, with shipping.

Seller send me an email 5-6 days later, states that she over-listed and has none left. Offers to send me two, larger-size knives like the one I bought, or one the same size but different color.

I took the two knives. Worked for me :)

I sold an item on E-Bay a few weeks ago. I'm not running a business - just getting rid of stuff i don't need. So, I need a Postal MO, I don't take PayPal.

The old guy I dealt with was so nice, commented how much trouble he had in the past with buying and selling, was a GREAT communicator and seemed like a first rate guy.

Bottom line was when he said the MO was in the mail, I went ahead and mailed the item right away, even before I received the MO.

They crossed in the mail....I got the $ and he got the item at the same time.

He was so happy to deal with an honest person, he send me a letter with 2 dollar bills in it. (The item only cost $25)

Moral of the story.......yep, lots of thieves out there, but there still are a few honest people left.

Your lucky Jim. And yes, there are some good honest sellers out there, unfortunately they are few and far between. I dropped ebay 4 years ago as I have found many web stores for things have similar if not cheaper prices than you find on ebay. For example, iboats, Sears, radio world etc. Just got to wait and search for sales.

Re: I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

I've had mostly good experiences with both. I just recently sold off my model train collection on ebay and did very well. With the exception of a couple slow-payers and one first time bidder who never paid (wasn't a big deal because the next highest bidder happily bought the item) it all went very smoothly. Most of the people I've dealt with on CL has been honest and friendly as well.

I think the most difficult thing is dealing with no-shows on CL. I swear only like 20% actually show up when they say they will.

I did have one doofus though recently. I was looking for a set of tires for my truck. I don't drive it much at all and my tires are dry rotting. Don't want to drop $600 on a new set for a '90 truck that I drive like a thousand miles a year. So I find this great looking matched set of 4 on CL and ask how old they are. Guy says they're like 2 years old or something like that. I shlep out to the other end of town to take a look and they are almost as rotted as mine. I was pretty irritated.

Re: I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

I've had both experiences:

Mostly selling, My camaro: I represented everything, took lots of pictures, washed and waxed my car the day before the guy came to pick it up, was happy as could be.

Nissan Xterra I sold for my uncle, took lots of pictures, explained the accidents/ 165,000 MILES, issues, someone bought it and then complained non stop about the high miles/ parts it needed..... (Did I not explain it all in the ad?)

Last transaction was selling a High mileage Mustang GT we had, car wasnt worth shipping, was just looking for a local pickup, wasnt going to generate enough for me to care to pick someone up from an airport so I CLEARLY stated that in the ad, what do I get? people from FL bidding on the car wanting help with shipping/ airport runs and reliability guarantees of will it make it 1500 miles back to FL? I wrote back to the guy saying I dont want to sell it to him as it is
more work then worth to me and I dont trust a 200K 14YO car for that kind of trip and he continued to hassle me "why not's?"

I did screw someone recently on a text book by accident, it sold and I never saw the message for a week so I felt like a jerk since he really needed it and I had no idea it sold out:facepalm:.

Same thing here. We have a dining set for sale and the buyer, after trying to drop me down 200 bucks, doesn't show up this past Sunday. Man, I don't know what it is with people now a days.

Yeah, and I'm only an hour away from you, if you drive slow.

MY last eBay deal was looking for a old Wide eye humminbird fish finder for parts. Mine had a cracked face plate and screen and thier were several and I have no doubt several of the sellers kept bidding them up to ridiculous prices think I was going to jump all over it but I didn't, it was amusing actually a 20,00 burned up finders were supposedly selling for 100.00 and it plainly stated they weren't working. And it took me around 15 auctions to run across a honest seller and find one . welcome to flea bay.

And best of all, the lack of punctuation and spelling. Much like some posters here, they give me a headache.

Learned long long ago (in the days of print on paper) want ad's do not tell the whole truth and
to "Buy Locally if you can find it !
Example !! Bought ignition switch for my new boat. Found one new on CL for $20.00 plus shipping
came to 32$$. Couple phone calls got me one for 40 mile trip & $`10.00 used, out of a 3 month old boat that
was up for salvage. Floating logs do wonders to Glassies !!

I only buy cars locally. If I dont find it, I will just bide my time checking every now and then.

got tired of driving 3 hours one way with a trailer to find the car shown online completely different than advertised.

car parts I sell on ebay always get my user name written in black sharpie on them. extremely hard to fake my signature as my handwriting is so weird AND left handed lol. I take pics of all products with my name written on them and dont delete them until the after auction expires or I get feedback. I post this info in my auctions as well.

Re: I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

I'm with you guys although it seems my last Craigslist purchase will turn out fine.

I don't like any online ad and approach each one with a suspicious mind. My first CL purchase... 17 foot bass boat with Johnson motor at least an hour and a half drive. Called the guy and he said, had it out last week and it runs great. I arrived and he said, there is a small soft spot. OMG. The motor was froze solid and worthless. Hadn't run in forever. The boat was 14 feet, not 17 and it was pretty darn obvious the whole thing was rotting away.

I have looked at a countless number of boats, motors, and you name it. "Oh yeah, the transom is solid as a rock" and you arrive to see the plywood pulling out like sheets of paper.

I can say that MOST of the time it is misrepresented or at minimum, patched up to make it look good. I cannot believe how dishonest the average poster is. It is all BOHICA!! when it comes to buying something. If it looks new, smells painted, or is super clean my BS detector runs into the red zone. Now I try to go on recommendation from people I know and it seems to work better. I can tell you...it takes a lot for me to part with my cash and I will low ball the heck out of you just to see if you bite. You can tell a lot about a man with how he negotiates.

There are somthings you buy on ebay and there are some things you don't. I buy a ton of stuff on ebay and have had just a couple things happen in hundreds of purchases with those being ironed out in the end.

Re: I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

I have only allowed myself to be taken advantage of once, and it was my own fault. CL post for a boat I thought I needed, and the drive was over 4 hours one way. I should have known better than to drive this far and blame no one but myself for not qualifying the boat better before I drove out to see it. All it cost me was gas and time, but again, I am usually very good as sniffing out the jokers.
I picked up my Lone Star (resto boat in signature) on CL and I closed the deal including the reduced price before I even got in the truck. I think there are more good sellers than bad, either that or I'm really that good???
Getting mad at the auction site isn't the answer, got to change the way you qualify the buy if possible.

Re: I think I've had it with E-bay... even the classified ads. Ugh...

sold something on ebay for the first time in 5 years and thought of this thread.

so the first high bidder 24 hours before auction end emailed me and said he couldn't pay and asked to cancel his bid, he probably overbid and found the same item cheaper and lied. So I cancelled it, next highest bidder didn't pay so I filed a non paying bidder complaint to get my money back (TWENTY FIVE DOLLAR FINAL VALUE FEE ARE YOU NUTS??) he didn't respond, so I closed the case and got the credit, now I can't even leave him (-) feedback to tell other sellers he's a deadbeat.

ebay makes money off sellers, but they need buyers to attract sellers, I don't understand why the buyers have all the power now.

Since I haven't sold in forever paypal is holding my money hostage, for up to 21 days!!

While you establish a successful sales history on eBay, in most cases, funds from eBay sales are available in 21 days - or sooner, based on how you ship the order. Learn more.
