So I cancelled it, next highest bidder didn't pay so I filed a non paying bidder complaint to get my money back

I wouldn't think that guy would be obligated to pay once he was outbid.

he is, as he had over 48 hours to retract his bid. Instead he ignored the emails from ebay and the invoice to pay and didn't say anything until the case was opened.

When I sell, I am amazed at the am't of pestering someone will do when they buy a 20-dollar item from me.

Like, here's a Voltmeter, new-in-box.... you bought it for 20 bucks. You want to call me and ask questions after you bought it? You are emailing me and asking me general boating questions? Really?

I sold a prop. The guy that bought it started asking all sort of questions; he wanted to call me. Dude, it's a basic prop! I listed every detail about it! Serial number... all specs! I can't support you going forward.

And the guy that bought my Scarab? Jeebus H. Cripes: Put your big boy pants on! He tracked me down and started texting me one night when I was out at dinner asking about fuel shut offs, etc. Buddy, you blew me off when I was going through all the things you need to know. You didn't call my engine builder or Merc tech. and they were willing to offer insight. So, you're own your own now, ace.

I gave up. I don't have the patience to post anything on there right now. It was funding my car/boat port, but I am so done with people, and ebay just brings more people into my life.

Whew. Got a headache thinking about it.

Can you imagine if he was bidding on a car, got outbid and then bought another car instead. A day later he is all of a sudden high bidder again on the car he got outbid on. I can see circumstances where one wouldn't end up paying.

It's not ebay or the website, it's the sellers and in this case you rolled the dice and made a bad decission IMO. I did it once last year
about this time too. All the signs were there and I elected to ignore them, drove 4 hours one way, only to be really dissapointed. Cost me a vacation day, $100 gas, and my time, to remember, I decided to do this. No one forced me to drive 200 miles one way to see a crapy boat.
The very next day I found a 1961 Lone Star in my signature, with twin 35's hanging on the back. I asked enough questions, negotiated my price, and drove 220 miles (one way) to make the transaction.
I bet you can sniff out these folks, or a bad deal, if you take your time and ask all the right questions. Your instincts are usually right, if you listen.

all he has to do is retract the bid boss, it takes 5 seconds. HE let the auction end with HIS bid at the top.

If he reads his email. There have been cases where I leave for a weekend and don't read any of my emails, especially the email account I use for ebay. If he figures he bid and, was outbid and he doesn't check later, he could be screwed.

This is another reason I use an automatic snipe service for all of my bidding. If I decide to not bid on something, I just remove the snipe bid from my snipe server.

i use to make 1 to 5k a month on ebay with my wife just buying local stuff and selling online and my wife buying plastic doll furniture and painting it to make it look real. after 2 years my wife had a awsome rep and people would search for her by name and pay high prices for her work. one set of furniture went for $550 i held the money in my account waiting for the "im not happy" email and there was the email but it was to ask for 4 other pieces at the same price. then about 2 years ago things changed and the constant hassle got to the point where it didnt seem worth the effort with people. "i bought this i think i payed to much i want my money back"....."no problem post it back and i will refund the money and your postage"......"i carnt i gave it to my niece for her birthday"....."is she unhappy with it then post it back"......." no shes happy but i payed to much"......."i can only refund if you return it".......ebay complaint yay

I've had the best of luck selling on CL but it is Oh So True, what you say. Not an issue though if you handle it right. People that call are seldom able to come straight away. They always have to wait until they get off of work or until a spouse comes home or yada, yada,yada! Fine! I simply tell them it is first come, first serve and to call me when they are ready to walk out the door and if I still have the item, I will hold it for only the amount of time that it would take them to get here.

Most people never call back but that is ok because I have already discounted them. The ones that are really serious do call back. Sometimes the serious ones will alter their plans and come immediately.

I had one lady get p***ed at me for 'playing that game' and I was giving the item (4'x20ft pool) away for free. That was ok because the next caller hustled right over.

Price it right on CL and it will sell.

I've had good luck on ebay, both buying and selling. However I have never had to drive far to make a purchase.

For anything $50 or less on CL, I put it on my doorstep and tell them to take it and put the money under the mat if they want it. Never had a problem.

I got burned by this type of scenario. We were looking for a camper. I called, had cash in hand and told them how far away I lived and the time it would take to get there. I got a promise that it would be held. Drove 100 miles one way, got there to see someone hooking up to it. Seller tells me "he got here first with the cash" and then offered me his card. I took the card, only to burn it right in front of him.

Finally decided to try to sell my first item on Ebay, an old 35mm camera. I didn't expect much and was pleasantly surprised to see it bid up to $30. Buyer never responded to invoice or several follow up e-mails. I sent it to Ebay resolution, which said it would close the case in 4 days if no response. Two weeks later I finally manually closed case with no response or any action from Ebay. They reversed the final value fee but still charged me listing fee.

I've bought lots of stuff on there and only had one minor issue with a seller. I have lots of stuff I'd rather sell than donate, but after that experience I'm not so sure I'm even going to try again. I guess I'm just old enough to remember when your word actually was a BOND. *sigh*

I thought you can only retract your bid with over 24 hours left on the auction?... and you say in a previous post that the bidder ahead of him had 24 hours left when he cancelled, so in essence he would become the new high bidder with no option to retract his bid.
I agree with bruceb58...If I'm outbid, then I'm back on the hunt...of course I'm one of those bidders that waits for 5 seconds left before placing the bid anyway, so I'll never find myself in this predicament
