Here's the link.

I want to purchase this boat:
http://www.hughesmarineservice.com/...798&ginv_id=8709&linkname=Used Boat Inventory

They agreed $7500 with no trailer and with a full check out and test drive. I've seen the boat, other than a good cleaning/waxing, it's perfect.

I can't find a trailer for less than about $1400, so I've been thinking about buying a good trailer with a junk boat. Turns out this boat isn't that bad. The trailer, first of all, has electric brakes, and is in good shape. The boat is in good shape. He said it did have some soft spots, but he fixed them. He says the boat is solid now. (just so you know, I'm fully expecting the entire floor/stringers to be rotted out). But the trim works, engine runs good, and outdrive. It is a Mercruiser.

He said he'd take best off and wants what he's asking, but money talks (his words). I'm thinking trying to get the whole thing for $1200.

How much could I part out the boat? I'm talking engine and outdrive. Hull would probably be thrown away.

Are people usually looking for motors and outdrives? How much would they go for?

If you want to throw a boat hull away, do dumps take them? Is there a cost?

Think it's a good idea? Both trailer and boat have good titles. I'm leaving my house in 45 minutes to go look at it. I'll be on my Droid and checking this forum to see what you guys think.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve If the trailers good and you get it for 1400 or less you are even or money ahead of buying just a trailer.

Yes you can part out a boat - time is money - maybe you flip the boat w/o the trailer. If you sell it for $1000 and you paid $1200 you have a $200 trailer. Or maybe you can break even.

You could probably make money by parting it all out again time is money. Part costs vary on what area the country your in. If you took the time you could make money.

Up here in Michigan that boat would cost about $200 to toss it at the dump

Good luck

I think I have your solution if you would like to get good money out of that boat, Donate it for the tax right off. Call around and find a charitable organization that will take a boat without a trailer, there are several here in Denver so I bet you can find one too. tell them you can transport it if they have a place to drop it, go buy the old lady and drive her to the charity drop it and go pick up the Mariah. You may want to dip the old lady in the water to soak the bunks before you rip it off the trailer.

You can take a chainsaw to it and put it in a dumpster.

That's funny! I don't think chainsaw blades have a very good appetite for fiberglass!

Well, I have a POS boat in my driveway! I'll try to keep this short. I drive 35 minutes to this guys house. First thing I see is it's an OMC drive. I said to the guy, "you said it's a Merc!". He's clueless. But the trim motors work. Did you know the trim moves the entire engine? That's freaking weird. Anyway, he bumped the starter and it fired right away with no smoke. The boat is actually not as bad as I thought, but I'd be willing to bet it's rotted out.

The trailer has lights, and all but one tail light actually work. Oh, the dude told me it has electric brakes and good tires. It has non working surge brakes! And the tires are tiny. 12" skinny tires and wheels. But, the hard lines to the brakes look good. No rust on the trailer.

So...I got him down to $800 with titles for both boat and trailer. I figured that even if I need to put $500 into the trailer, that would be about what I would be paying for a trailer that needed work.

What do you guys think? The donation thing is an interesting idea. Only thing is I don't get any cash right now. How do they value it?

I'm thinking I may hook muffs up to the boat tomorrow (just realized I don't have any), and see how the engine and drive is.

I know OMC is bad because you can't find parts for them. Does that sometimes mean that people are looking for drives and engines for cheap?

Anyway, I'll take some pictures tomorrow and start poking around and see what I've got.

Thanks guys!
Steve

BTW...I like the chainsaw idea!

If your talking about a tax write off the write off is the amount that the charity sells it for. so if you pay 800.00 and the charity sells it for 800.00 and your in the 28% bracket you would save $224.00 on your return and only lose $576.00. most likely the charity would dump it for the first offer of $100.00 or so. Then your write off would be $28.00.

Here is another way to do the tax write off thing, donate it to the local volunteer fire department. Here you agree on the write off/value and they hand you the receipt you dump the boat and they get to play with it, burn it, cut it up whatever they want. If you do it now there's a good chance they will write 2010 on the receipt instead of 2011. I just did this in December with a VW Passat w/blown motor thats why I suggested it, win win kinda thing.

$7500??? with no trailer? Well that one isn't going anywhere fast:D That boat is pretty over priced by about 2 grand and thats with a dang trailer... Guess the dealer has to make bucks too

Yikes it is likely a stringer drive:eek:... They suck, but someone may want it... What engine? You sure it's a 350? BTW all boat trailers I have seen with brakes have surge brakes.. Electric and water don't do so well... You may be surprised if ya put some brake fluid in there they might work... They are tough...

Sell the boat on E-bay.... Just let her ride, you will get something for it, shoot it runs.. Tell em no trailer but you may bring it to them local blah blah... It will sell

I bought a junk 1989 bayliner last year for the trailer, and used a saws-all, and chain saw to cut up the boat after stripping it. The chain saw worked great, and fast. I went through two blades, cuz I hit a few screws. Just make sure all fuel lines, and tank are out first. I paid $250 for the whole package, and after parting out parts made about $1400. I did have to put in about 12 hrs with another person, and time to list parts on Ebay and CL.

OMC parts are tough to find. You should be able to make some money parting that thing out on ebay and/or CL

Not up here. I've even looked down to Charlotte, NC. Call any marina around here and they say the same thing. For whatever reason, trailers are very hard to find.

The marina that I'm trying to buy the Mariah from can't find anything.

Trust me, I've been looking for over a month.

Here are a couple of pictures I just took. I'm going to go to the DMV and register the trailer and pick up some muffs on the way home. I'm going to get the engine running and see how it runs. Maybe I'll take a video.

The tax write off is the amount that "THEY" sell it for. The loop hole is closed)

The marina that has the Mariah I want just called. They may be in interested in the engine and drive. If everything checks out, he'll give me $400 for the whole thing.

I'm going to get the boat cranked up and see how everything checks out.

lol, they're ripping you off. a good running 350 is worth its displacement alone. keep the engine as a spare for the mariah when you buy it.

part the outdrive out and call around to the landfills. I found a local one that will take boats @ $7.50 per 500lb.
