I was warned.

No question, just a vent!

I got a really good deal on a brand new Mercury Mariner 9.9. Runs great with throttle only while hooked up to the flusher ear muffs. Eight days after I buy it, I hit the lake, start it up, let it idle a moment, then go to put it in gear and it won't go. Gotta reach around over the transom and lift the lever to allow it to go into gear. And then take the hood off and lift the flywheel lock so it can start in gear because it won't come out of gear.

So, it's headed to the shop 8 days after purchase. What a joke! This was broken from the start, but I wasn't able to know until I tried it the first time.

I was warned about the shifter in the throttle setup, and sure enough, I got a crapper from the word go!

Re: I was warned.

My apologies to those looking for an outboard and wanting good info. I have to take back my badmouthing the Merc. Can't leave that out here without reversing it.

When I got home yesterday storms kept me from flushing the motor, but I did that today. And while tinkering, thinking there HAD to be something I was missing, I took the hood off and checked out just where that shifter rod is being raised/lowered from inside the engine compartment. Once I saw what it was, and that it looked to be moving but just very tight, I shifted it harder and voila, it shifts in and out of gear just fine, so I have to take back my bad comments. Not knowing what it was supposed to do exactly, it was my hesitation to possibly break something from the start by turning a throttle that I thought wasn't going to turn without my breaking it.

Re: I was warned.

i dont know if the 9.9 is the same but on my 25hp there is a black plastic twist knob about half way down the tiller and that can be tightened or loosened to your liking

Re: I was warned.

Yes, it has the same thing. That wasn't the issue, I had that opened all the way. My problem was that when I lowered the throttle toward neutral, I didn't turn it hard enough to get over the 'knotch' between F and N, and then between N and F (or R). I was just hesitant since it wasn't making the transition in and out of neutral very easy so I didn't want to force something that I could have been breaking in doing so.

Thanks for the reply though.
