IAT sensor modification for HP

Someone on ebay is selling a mod for IAT sensors, it makes the sensor think the outside temp is 58 degrees (using resistance), which it says makes horsepower.

The IAT sensor is left unplugged, with the resistor stuck into the contacts.

Anyone hear of this or can tell me if it sounds too good to be true. Claim is 18 HP increase.

18HP, don't think so.

All it is doing is richening your fuel ratio.

Also you can buy the resistor at radio shack for like $1. Look around for what value you need. Don't get taken for it on ebay.

The trick works temporarily. The problem is your engine is typically too smart, and over time it will see that the engine is running too rich by the readings it gets from the O2 sensors, and it will readjust itself to the optimal ratio, negating your trick. Now when you take it back out the engine will run lean, perhaps destructively lean, until it again readjusts.

People I know use it at the track, they'll take out the IAT sensor and stick in the resistor for a run, then put it back so the engine never has time to recalibrate itself. In that case it's useful, you will get a slight increase in power. Slight is the word. But as a permanent mod i'd not do it.

ZM's idea seems better because at least you're still taking a real air temp reading.

Read the link ZmOz, I like it. The orig sensor stays put.
