I just thought of something...

since it's a law (most places) to carry a life vest when boating...does that same law apply if you're walking on the lake when it's frozen?

I know it wouldn't keep you from freezing to death, I just had a Steven Wright moment and thought I'd share.

spots

If you can walk on water without a life vest, :) , then why would you need a life vest to walk on frozen water ?

Frozen water becomes legal roadway in many places, vehicle/driving laws apply.

I do know people that wear a life jacket while on the ice.
They say it will take the panic away if you go thru, and allow you to think clearly enough to try to get out. It also makes body recovery easier for the divers, as you will be floating up against the ice.

Been thru the ice up to my ears, not a thing I want to experience again.

Re: Ice Vests?

This post and the one by flyrod "Thin Ice", ought to go together. The subject comes up almost yearly about ice fishing and when it's safe to move out onto the ice. Always good input on these posts.

I went through a two day ice rescue class a couple years back. Had to get into the water myself to be rescued. Even with a wet suit on, I did not enjoy being in the frigid water. I can imagine how a person feels going through the ice in winter cloths. It's something I wouldn't want to experience either.

I went through the ice several times as a kid but only on a shallow ice skating pond. Is hard to get out even when you can touch bottom once the frigid water soaks through to your skin. Its so cold it burns.

Flyrods post is the one that sparked this one but his was about folks dying and I was afraid throwing humor in there might leave a bad taste in somebody's mouth.

Ponds rarely ice over enough to even consider going out on downhere. I only remember it happening twice in 34 years. One of those time I fell through up to my knees and my boots filled up with slush. Most unplesant.

WHen I fish in the winter I usually wear my life vest under my coat or coveralls. It acts as additional insulation and it allows me to remove my coat/coveralls to make it easier to get back in the boat while still keeping me afloat.

So far, I haven't had to test this theory.

knock on wood.

spots

Big Lake, AK is one of those places.
I was out on the lake on my snowmachine, taking a break, when two very large, heavy trucks passed by on the "ice road." Mannnnnnnn, that was a weird feeling. Like being in a boat, up and down with the waves under the ice, lots of cracking sounds....and that ice was 3-4 feet thick!!!

AK Chappy

all the suggestions above are good but the vest will also help keep you warm,,and you can sit on it

No Laws to make us wear them, not many do, I wear one early in the Ice season, I also carry ice picks and a whistle.
