hello,

I have a boat that is a Bell Boy, the year I believe is 1977. the model number for it is 981060. anyways I am having a shift problem, I have no forward, but reverse works fine. the trouble is that I can not find any info on how to correct the problem mainly because I dont even know what type of outdrive I have. my shifter does not have the buttons for F,N,R. here is a pic of a shifter that looks exactly like mine. sorry but the Seloc manual that came with the boat is missing alot of pages and what I have is no help at all.

anyone know what exactly I have, a stringer? cobra....IDK

by the way it is a 175hp model and has a ford 302 in it.

thanks in advance for any help.

Re: ID\shift help

almost sure you would have a early electric shift OMC Stringer type drive. At the transom you should fine 2 wires with a rubber sleeve type covering coming in and connecting to the harness.check for 12V at each terminal when shifting to fwd and rev.If power is available then suspect a drive issue.

are you talking about the big black and yellow rubber plugs that have many wires running through them, that are on top of the engine but towards the back? those plugs?

Agree but try reversing wires, when control in reverse you should have forward. If you do suspect control box shift switch or wire problem. If not check ohms on green going into drive key off wire should be 5-7 compare with blue. If drive has power to both wires and still no forward probably a broken spring in drive$$$$. Let us know what you find.

Re: ID\shift help

I wanted to give an update on this.

I found the 2 shift wires right above the tilt motor and sure enough it is an electric shift. I was hoping for a bad switch in my remote control but no such love, I am getting 12 volts to each wire, green and blue. reverse is engaging perfectly, but nothing for forward. I definately have a problem in the lower unit.

I tried testing for OHM's but my OHM meter is not good enough to get down to the 5-7 range, both of the settings just peg all the way up the scale.

I removed the outdrive and now have it here at my home. I am reading up on the manual about taking the drive apart. I will change the impeller, seal everything while I am in there, I do have alot of spare gaskets and parts for this, too bad not a coil though.

so I am guessing my forward coil is shot and am looking for a replacement. has anyone on here ever taken apart an elec shift that they can give me any tips on ?

I will try to document this while I am in there to help any other poor peeps with these dinosaurs.

TIA for any tips on tackling this

I did when Noah was building the Ark, lower needs complete disassembly to remove the coils
Borrowed some tools to do it, but would never do another one.

do you remember if you had to have any 'special tools' from OMC, or would regular mechanic tools get you through it?

Re: ID\shift help

Check the amperage that the green and blue wire puts out. Mine had low amps coming out of the switch confirming a problem with the switch. Mine pops out of drive after 1500 rpms. Checked the props and its still good and the outdrive is showing the correct ohms. Im now looking for other switch options like you are....
