Ideas for manual tilt?

My 1985 85hp Force has no power tilt/trim, and unlike some Johnson/Evinrudes, it does not even have a manual tilt assist.

Looks like I will be keeping this motor for a while and need to come up with solutions to running in shallow water. IE, the motor needs a tilt setting where the gear case and skeg sit only about 3 inches below the keel. This will allow the boat to idle around in shallow waters to get the boat back out to deep water where the motor can be let fully down. I often anchor in 2 ft of water, load the boat and with wind and waves, its hard to push the boat out to deep water, get in , drop the motor, and fire it up before the wind pushes it back into shallows and the skeg/prop hit bottom.

My solution is to make a tilt lever similar to the small motor tilt lock used to hold the motor in the full up position, and it will allow the motor to "lock" at my desired tilt angle. Thinking of a 3/16 x 2 x 8" flat steel bar mounted on the starboard side of the transom mounting bracket with two or three slots cut that will engage the nut similar to what is on the port side, but heavier duty, and piviting in a different location so forward/reverse will not let the motor "kick" out of the slots.

Anyone else come up with a solution to the "no tilt lock" problem? I sure would like to hear it!

Re: Ideas for manual tilt?

I have a 77' 70HP evinrude, and i'm in the same boat! (no pun intended :) )

Manual tilt is a total pain (on larger outboards), especially around here with the almost non existent water depth...

I opted to go with a used trim/tilt setup... I found a guy at a marina that has one, and will install it parts/labor for 350 bucks (with a 30 day warranty)... I think its worth it for all the headache of trying to mess with some sort of rigged up configuration. (I even know there are marine salvage places that specialize in selling used PTT setups).

Its cheaper than buying an aftermarket setup (around 700 bucks), and since its factory original style servicing it should still be easy as well..

I would suggest just shopping around and seeing what you could find.

good luck!

if you never intend to go faster than idle with engine tilted then it is easy to rig up a tilt. If you search you may even find some of those old systems with a pull handle pump and you would not even need wiring.

If you want to hold the engine up at throttle then you'll need trim. If there was a cheap and easy way to add decent trim then everybody would have done it by now.

Awesome for you...I would love to find that deal!

I'm hoping to find a blown outboard or junker boat for cheap with it on so I can get it added to mine.

Re: Ideas for manual tilt?

The problem with the old Force power tilt/trim systems is two fold:

1) they are almost 30 years old. Seals are failing, housings are corroding, and rebuild kits are hard to find.

2) A used tilt on ebay typically goes for $300 and up. I don't feel like paying $300 for a 30 year old used tilt that is questionable to begin with and has a limited life expectancy.

So that's why I just want to be able to lock the motor in one position that I need it to be in to idle out to deeper water.

BTW, what are the
old systems with a pull handle pump and you would not even need wiring.
that RRitt mentioned?

it's like a floor jack with long tube that goes back to engine.

Cool! How old are these things? That looks like its easy to make fit anything.

Sure wouldn't mind buying one of those new. Going to do some searching for these things new(er) than this unit of unknown quality.
