I have two on board. they are wedged between the seat and the gunwale - one on each side. It also gives me a place to wedge my shirt.

my fathers boat had velcro strips on the side council and the loop strips on the throwable. we had to sew the loop strips to the throwable as the glue didnt stick for long..

I thought about that, and expected the same result. wonder if an iron on would stick better.

no, Iron on did nothing but melt the nylon covering of the throwable.

however 5 minutes with a curved needle and thread and it was done.

Re: ideas for throwable storage.

guess i'm in the 95%. i have two on board, my normal load. we both sit on them. in our case, it makes our height just right with the windshield + i fig. i got real old upholstery, so if i don't sit directly on upholstery, maybe it'll last longer. oh, and when i pull my back to back seats out into a sofa, i use the type IV as a pillow. oh, i do that too. them canoe seats get hard after a long paddle. only thing i don't like about that is it raises my center of gravity a bit. it's ok though. i just deal with that. better to sit on something soft.

The Coast Guard does not have the ability to ticket you. However, they do have the authority to asses the vessel as unsafe for operation due to safety violations and force you back to you to either your home port, or the nearest port until the vessel is made safe for travel.

Used to be, if you got caught sitting on them, the LEO might flunk them-that's because, back in the day, the inside was three plastic bags filled with kapok, and sitting on them could put an air leak in the bags. Apparently some LEO's think that's still the case.

And that's not to say we didn't sit on them back then and that the LEO's usually didn't bother the older boaters. But at that time, when my friends and I were guys 14-19 years old ruling the river, the LEO's were not so nice to us. "Spect we deserved some of it.

well. i finally got the boat home, and guess what. I dont have a handle on the back of my seat....

so i stuck it down between the seat and the gunwall, and used a big ol suction cup to hold one strap so it cant blow out.

throwables are most effective if they have a 20' line tied to them. So tie a line to it, tie off the line, and in the off chance it blows out, no problem.

Or sit on it like 95% of boaters do--at least those who don't have built-in cushions (sofas).

I can wedge one in the foot rail below the helm; I sit on another if driving seated or if standing, put it between the seat and my legs and lean against it (extended leaning post).

Thats actually a great idea. Never thought of that. If I threw someone my red cushion (we always have two onboard) the captain is not supposed to jump in or whose controlling the boat from drifting away on a windy day? I'm going to tie 20 feet of thin line to one of the handle straps on each cushion, coil it and attach it with a velcro strip. This way it won't interfere with our using them for back support or foot rests. Thx for that tip. They actually should sell these cushions with line already attached to them!

We use this style throwable/boat cushion, napping pillow etc: http://www.iboats.com/Floating-Seat...090179--session_id.339249061--view_id.1107832

quote, The Type IV throw able device must be located such that it is immediately available. unquote. That doesn't mean immediately available inside a cuddy or compartment. If the LEO can't see it in the cockpit, that argument will be a loser every time.

And USCG has the regulatory authority to issue Federal tickets requiring Federal resolutions. Scoff at their ability at your peril ...

I thought kapok for PFDs was outlawed long ago !

Hey...Atleast ya'll only get checked by the CG......Where I live every county or city police jurisdiction that touches the lake is out checking folks......that means 4 or 5 different entities with different opinions of what the laws are.......gets tricky

back in the day that was the DNR's job and responsibility......not anymore.

Mine is hanging from a hook on the salon bulkhead. Is there anywhere on your boat you can mount a hook to hold the strap or the actual throwable (if it's a ring, like mine)?

Re: ideas for throwable storage.

Around here we get stopped regularly sometimes multiple times a day. I keep my throwable in one of the storage/rod lockers and nobody has said anything. The PFDs are kept under the flip up seats. Im surprised they havent told me to keep it on deck, they sure as hell are picky enough, checking for horns, fire extinguisher working, waterway passes, registration, oars, etc etc etc. Im pretty sure they are really just searching for drunk boaters but they check for everything almost every time they stop us.

here, if you get stopped, they give you a gold slip. if you get stopped again for 6 months, just flash that and they move along.

jackets dont have to be out, unless the passenger is under 14, then they have to be wearing it.

I should just get the aux guy at the ramp to do it, then i wont have to worry.
