98 - 225 johnson - runs fine but isn't 1700 rpm a lot high for ideling. should water pressure gauge show at least 5 lbs. . runs 15 lbs. when running down lake around 4000 rpm . boat will also run with safety kill switch completley removed. just bought boat & working out bugs. I also would like to find a service & parts manual. thanks

1700 is quite high for idle -- if it is indeed at 1700. Lets make sure the tach is right first. At 1700 it'd be awfuly tough to get it out of gear, if not impossible without breaking something. Make sure your tach is set on position 6.

Next look at where the water pressure gauge is picking up pressure. It almost sounds like its T'd into the overboard line. It should pick up pressure at the adaptor plate.

if the kill switch is on the keyswitch once pulled you can restart it without the lanyard in place. it must be reset each time its pulled. when pulled it actually moves the key to the off position instead of grounding the ign like the old ones did.
