Hi,
I cannot id my motor, the serial number plate has been removed (possibly to hide the age - sigh). Here is the info that I have:
225 HP VRO (what does vro mean anyway? Something about oil mixing?)
Only a rear vent on cover (I have seen side vents in some pics)
Purchased in Australia
Long shaft
I was told it was early 90's - but am unsure about that.

I want to buy a manual, as every time I take it to mechanic it costs me $500 !! So I think it is time to bite the bullet and get mt hands dirty.

Thanks for your help .. great forums, which I would like to use, but cannot until I know what motor I have.

Tim

PS: Can I add a photo to help id this motor?

Look for a silver welsh plug on the motor block. Post any numbers/letters that you find.... And VRO stands for Variable Ratio Oiling..It's the automatic oil pump on the motor that varies the mix according to engine needs(Speed, Etc.)

Thanks Rick,
Found this number in the welsh plug.

0431798

I thought that's what the VRO stood for, thanks for confirming it. Mine is disconnected... I premix the fuel.
Cheers,

TIm

Looks like a serial number. Still no help in determining the year. There are some on here who can do it using the serial number, but I'm not one of them....Maybe others will chime in...But, it probably is around a 1990-1995 model...The model number would be something like E225TLENB with the "EN" being a 1992 year model as an example. Sorry I can not help more....

look at the main harness connector, if its a red round one its older than 95, if the port head has a two wire sensor W/B and a tan, wire its 88 or above. i dont think the 87 had quickstart.
doews it have a single power pack or one on each block bank.

The main harness connector is red (well sort of) and definitely round.
There is one wire coming out of each head at the top, which is brown (possibly tan).
It has two power packs. sigh .. and I have had both of the damn things fail on me at the worst time .. LOL
Cheers,

Tim

the twin pack set up was used until about 88 maybe 87. and it does not have quick start, a dual pack failure is rather rare, that is for both to fail at the same time.
the packs fail but its hard to belive both at the same time unless someone hit it with 12V or something.
look at the BRP website and you can see when the last year production run of the twin pack 225 loopers was.

Actually it isn't the packs that are the current (oh bad pun) problem. It is the fuel pump. I just spoke with the Asutralian branch of BRP, he is checking a whole lot of data I gave him, welsh plug numbers, type of head gasket tabs, etc...

The power packs didn't fail at the same time. One failed. then the other, then one of the replacements failed .. no warranty of course.....

By the way .. what is this 'looper' thing? I am quite ignorant about outboards, I can pull a car motor apart - but these things are completely different!

Cheers,

TIm

From your descriptions, the engine is either an '86 or an '87. In '88 they increased the engine displacement to 3.0L and came out with the single case powerpack with an internal computer, and the dual wire temp sensor.

The fuel pump assembly is the same no matter which year. The part number is 5004559 and is priced at about $285 US.

Since the motor is about 20 years old, flush out the oil tank, change the filter, and inspect all the hoses and fittings.

For more info, go to:
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html
