I have a 1975 SeaRay 888 Ford 302. The distributor is a marine distributor but doesn't have a manufacturers name on it anywhere. It has points/condensor and I am trying to convert to electronic. The distributor cap has slots (or whatever you call them) on the sides, the cap is fastened with two separate pieces of plastic that have screws running through them to tighten the cap down.

Now I assumed it was a prestolite screw down version and Napa agreed and ordered the sierra conversion.....the plate that the electronic unit sits on does not line up correctly, the instructions say with a counterclockwise rotation to align the cutout marked CC with the hole in the side of distributor....it will not do this and align with screw holes......also the plate the electronics are mounted on is smaller than the breaker point plate and will not sit in the distributor without using the breaker point plate below it........

the rotor sits too high to fit in the slots of the round plastic magnet sleeve (part of the conversion) that slides down over the shaft. Therefore it will not turn the magnets.

Napa was unable to cross reference the numbers on the distributor....
The distributor also has flyweights below the breaker plate, on one of them the spring is loose, is this normal...and do these flyweights cause the distributor to advance....or if not what is their function.

I will try to get a picture of the distributor on here if I can.....any help would be appreciated...this is getting frustrating....

Without seeing it it's hard to tell, it could be a Mallory dist.?

So, it's a Mercury marine Dist., and that spring is Fine! Sometimes, there's one light spring, & one heavy spring, on the advance weight's, (it looks like it's the heavy spring) and it has a slight space on the end, to give you quick advance on the bottom end of the RPM range. On my old 69' 440 Dodge Charger, the springs were that way also, and it had an even larger loop on the heavy spring for immediate out of the hole advance. You need to clean, & lubricate, the weights, & springs to work smoothly here.
