idle problem

i have merc 1967 500 50 hp starts and idles fine but when i put it in gear it dies so i idled it up but the slowest i can troll is 4mph and ihave to choke it to take off . new line and tank. if you think its the carbs. please give me a diagram because it looks hard to get to them a lot of stuff in the way. Try richening the carbs an 1/8 turn, CCW on the low speed. 4 mph is not a bad trolling speed for your motor, I doubt you can get it much slower, unless you go in reverse. At that age I doubt the reeds would let you go much slower, but you can try. Main point is to get the idel low enough, it doesn't grind going into gear, and rich enough it doesn't stall out when you do shift from neutral into gear.
