Idle used engine, a problem?

I am looking at a used boat with. The engine is Yamaha 4 stroke and has only 50 hours on it because the boat and engine have been stored in a garage for most of the time it has been owned.

A friend mentioned that he thought that this might be bad for the engine, that is to be idle for a number of years. He thought this was true of two strokes but did not know about four strokes.

Does anyone have any insight as to whether this is something I need to be concerned about or not?

Thanks in advance

Ahoy, tiger.

Welcome to iboats. :)

There is a possibility that old gas in the system has varnished some things.

We would need to know the exact model to give any useful advice.

It is a 2002 100HP, does that help or do you need more information?

I don't remember whether that engine is carbureted or EFI, tiger.

Either way, starting her up is the only way to know for sure what might have transpired during the lay-up. Carbs or fuel injection system might have been varnished and need overhaul, but that is not sure. My Suzi DF70 was just fine after laying up for a bit over a year.

Two things are for sure though. She will need a new impeller and the grease in the foot should be changed. Probably be a good idea to change the oil and filter, too.

Good luck. :)

the F100 for the US market was only made in a carbed version, like JB says, fire it up and see.
I will warn you the F100 is one of the most pain in the rear engines to do the carbs and the kits are about 85 dollars apiece and you will need 4. the only way to properly rest the shutters is with a manometer.
