They are called a Hydro Mite II. I bought one a few years back that looks like the one in the picture above. I was hoping I could find A little more info about it. It has a johnson motor (I'm guessing about a early 60's 6hp) Any info on the boat or finding spare parts would be great. Also it idles great but when I apply any gas is stalls out. I'm thinking it has a clogged main jet in the carb??<br />Cheers,<br /><br />Vox

Re: Idles but doesn't have any power

Ok I found out it is a 1952-58 7.5hp. I have cleaned out the gas tank, replaced the gas line and in-line filter. I have checked the oil in the lower unit and it looks great. This weekend I plan to rebuild the carburetor and replace the impeller.

It's almost definitely the carb. But check to make sure the throttle plate (under the flywheel) still turns when you throttle up. That's your spark advance.<br />Get your OEM carb kit from a Johnny/Rude dealer, or here. The 18-**** numbered replacement parts (aftermarket) carb kits don't come with a float, and the old fashioned cork floats have a tendancy to sink.<br /><br />I've got the same symptoms from cracked ignition coils in the past, which is a common problem with these old Johnny/Rudes. They arc over through the cracks when the rpms pick up, or when you move the armature plate on which they sit. Go after the carbs first anyway.<br /><br />Your going to need a manual. Get one here from iboats or an OEM reprint from:<br />TheOutboardWizard<br />Mastertech<br />Marine Engine<br />Ken Cook <br />Check ebay too. Sometimes used ones come up for a fraction of the price.<br />The manual will tell you things you need to know for these tasks, like the fact that you must remove the powerhead on 7.5hps to access the shift disconnect, so you can drop the L/U.<br /><br />You should be able to nail down the year a bit better. Have a look around The Old OMC Site.<br />A couple things you won't find there:<br />Spark Plugs - Champion J6C (was J6J) gapped at .030"<br />Oil Mix - 24:1 87 octane gas to TCW-3 rated outboard oil. Stick to this one and the rods will stay in the engine.<br />Do not ever, ever rev that engine above 1500RPM without a load on it. Otherwise, a rod or the flywheel may enjoy a liberating experience.<br /><br />EDIT: Hey, that's a cool boat! Looks like fun. :)

VOX,<br />try the old trick to find the year through the model number by using the word 'introduces'. the year should be the last letters in the model number. now about giving it gas and stalling out. it's an old motor, so i'm pretty sure it has points ignition. check to makes sure there's no wires missing/frayed. cleaning out the carb would work too. it sounds mainly like an ignition problem to me. if i'm wrong, i'm sorry. it's been a while since i've worked on an old motor. <br /><br />by the way, thats a funny lookin boat. nice though.

Re: Idles but doesn't have any power

Thanks to all for the feedback. When I got home from work this evening I removed the entire motor. This is very different from any other motor you may have ever worked on. I plan to take some pictures, so that you all can have a better look at it. It has no model number on it, so it is very difficult to figure out the exact year and hp. My plan is to take the whole thing to the Johnson Dealer tomorrow, so I can get the low down on it. Basically it consists of a power head, a custom shaft, and the lower unit. It is hard mounted into the boat and does not move. With the motor and custom shaft mounted on the inside of the boat and the lower unit on the outside. Steering is done with a rudder mounted on the back of the boat. There is no transmission it is strictly forward no neutral or reverse. Ok by now you’re starting to get the reason why my buddies at work call it ”The Death Trap”. As I was taking it apart I noticed that there were several broken items. One was a broken vacuum line that runs from the top of the motor to the bottom (Would this be causing some of my problems). Two was a broken spring on the shaft between the lower unit and the power head. The plan is to buy new parts for it tomorrow alone with a carb. ebuild kit. Thanks Again for all the feedback I appreciate it and hope for some more

http://www.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/p...f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/voxmorgan/my_photos <br /><br />Here are the pictures I promised I removed the entire motor and reassembled it outside of the boat. I replaced the vacuum hose and the damaged spring that was between the water pump and power head. I was in the process of rebuilding the carburetor when I noticed that the throttle and choke plates were installed in the carburetor upside down. The holes on the plates were on the topside not the bottom. Who ever rebuilt the carburetor last put them in wrong. I finished rebuilding the carburetor and fixed the position of the plates. I put it in some water connected up some gas and the thing ran like a champ. I also noticed that they fixed the spark advancement to the position it would be in at full throttle. Amazingly it actually works pretty well. It idles a little fast, but has plenty of top-end. In order to stop it you just let off the gas and it starves itself out and stalls
