idles good, quits on acceleration F15esh

12/97 15hp 4 stroke yamaha outboard starts and idles well. engine will not rev up, quits running when accelerated. how to clean main jet and/or test fuel pump?

post full model number off of port side bracket...

here are some diagrams from a 2004 F15ESHC...
best way to clean main jet is to pull the carb off and take the float bowl apart.

fuel pump can normally be tested by pumping primer ball till firm and then hold it... if it releases gas, and doesn't hold firm, the fp may need to be replaced. #9
there is also a strainer that should be looked at. #5

After removing bowl, can you suggest any methods for cleaning the jet short of soaking overnight? Also, is there a way to test the fuel pump output?

I have had good success with carb cleaner. make sure your fuel is good too. I have cleaned carbs only to find out the fuel was bad and had to redo them.

not sure about the lp fuel pump on that motor? for my engines 225's I "T" in a pressure gauge and motor the Hg. Do you have a service manual?

I haven't found a manual yet; was told not to buy Clymers. Do you recommend any particular one? Don't know where to get a Yamaha manual. Thanks.

Thanks for your help. Disassembled the bowl, cleaned the main jet and acelleration port but the biggest problem was the gasket between the carb and the intake manifold which had been damaged by a previous owner. Buttered it up w/permatex and away we went. Enjoyed boating this Sunday with my kids. Thanks again.

See working on these things ain't that hard and actually fun sometimes, especially when you can fix it yourself.

now that u fixed get the right gasket, maybe even keep a spare stashed away.also if bowl runs dry and is full of dried varnish, it takes a lone time to get carb cleaner through the jets, i use small diameter wire, like off twist ties wiyh paper removed or a strand of wire from speaker wire, run it through while spraying carb clean, then compressed air.
