idles to fast

can eney one help me with a 1967 50 hp merc 4cyl two strok that willnot idle down ,it idles about 800/1000 to fast to put in gear .i haved removed the throttle plat with ajusting squew and the disturber is all the way back to the stop and it looks like the throttle plats ar closed all the way .what can i do thanks.

Are you doing this with the motor hooked up to a water hose, or is it in the water?<br /><br />THe engine will idle fast when on the hose. It need to be in the water so there is backpressure on the exhaust, which will slow the engine down.

i have it in a barel of water the water level is about 6 in above the prop thanks fron jason eney body have eney idia why it idles to fast

Jason, Is the motor timed correctly? The timing belt from the flywheel to the distributor needs to be on a certain way. If it is one tooth advances, the motor will run fast until it is put into gear, and then it will die.

i donot know if it is timmed correctly can you tell me how to check i do not have a manual i just bought this motor and the guy said it just started idleing fast ,i did set the points to 13thou with a feeler gauge an i put in a new condenser the points looked fine but i cleened them eneyway.1967 merc 500 50hp can eney one help

Timing is the main driver on idling down. Check your idle pkp timing to the manual. Also check your belt(move piston to TDC and align the arrows on the distributor and flywheel) to ensure it is timed correctly(as stated earlier).

i rotated the dist.gear one tooth back and the engin idles grat now it seems to be a little dogy but it idles now thaks a million
