Re: Ignition coil

There is nothing wrong in giving opinions.
What a person needs to be able to do is be able to receive those opinions and then make up ones own mind based on the opinions offered.
We all learn from weighing up all the options and listening carefully before the decision is made.
I always prefer to shop around for parts as after 40 years in the auto industry one gets to see what is genuine or not. I have been on both sides of the fence as well. OEM and Aftermarket service.
Make the choice wiseley and most times you can save some money somewhere along the way.
:)
Good luck

Peter

I'm enjoying these posts incase you haven't noticed. And must intercede as the Devil's Advocate.(K-Mart oil found in Austrailian Coils?)
I needed a crank pulley (dampner) for a 3L Mercruiser.Ordered one from Merc, and it came in a Delco box, with a Merc sticker over the Delco number.Called the local GMC dealer, and the Delco number was 1/3 the price of the Merc number.
I had to sell my customer the Merc part because they may have modified the Delco part.
That's part of being a dealer, part of getting the customer the right part, and part why your dealer often can't substitute 'other' parts.
When I don't follow this,I become the manufacturer and am liable for doing it.

DHP

I had the same experience many years ago rebuilding a 400CC Canadian Curtiss Wright snowmobile engine in a Scorpion sled. The local Scorpion dealer only had one set of rings and jug gaskets. I happened to be in Wausau, WI and stopped at Mercury dealer knowing their sled used the same engine. Sure enough. CCW parts container with the label covered with a Mercury sticker. It's done all the time. Ford 400 engines years ago used a GM positive shift starter. Jeep/AMC used GM steering columns. Everyone had their own part number. Its a necessity to keep order in a counter man's life.

Re: Ignition coil

The answer to the original question is ? Look up what coil part # should be on the coil and the part #'s of all the other parts that make up the ignition. Over the years anybody could have changed any combination of parts just to get it running. YOU are responsible for the condition of the parts in your boat or if they are to be left non-standard. The real problem is if it conks out and a mechanic puts in correct parts and they keep failing. Guess who pays? Find out whats in there and make the right decision for yourself.

95% of the time the part number is on the box it came in not the part.
