Re: ignition conversion

No more points to adjust or replace, much more moisture-resistance. Ooops, I'm assuming you're talking about a Pertronix conversion. The pain in the butt with those is you can't leave the key in the on position with the engine not running or you burn 'em up.

I just did this conversion in my '89 4.3 OMC. As usual, the peace of mind knowing I don't have to monkey with points is worth it.

As far as power, you probably won't notice any difference. Might idle a bit better.

Re: ignition conversion

sorry I diddnt do any research before i asked that question. I think i may leave the points I dont mind them that much, give me another reason to go into the garage and get my hands dirty.

I am having a problem only at idle my temp gauge shoots up to around 200 and stays there until i get moving again. It got so hot the other day it my exhaust hoses slit open. Im thinkin raw water impeller or thermostat sticking. Ive never replaced an impeller before is it difficult???

Not with the pertronix II. You can leave the key on all day with them and you will be OK. That is why I picked the pertronix II over the pertronix.

I did notice a bit of easier starting and gained about 300 RPM. You can say that that could be from tuning but I tried it all before the conversion. I would never go back. My dad even runs them on his 66 mustang.

Re: ignition conversion

Changing the impeller on your Cobra is simple, remove the cover, pull the pump housing, r&r the impeller, done. If your wear plate is bad that too is easy while your there.

I would find the problem and not just through parts at it.

The boat is a Ski Brendella alot like a nautique Ive only had it for a couple of weeks but it dosnt have and outdrive. The water pump thats on the front of the motor i believe is raw water...(please correct me if im wrong im new to these motors on boats) I have no experience with changing the impeller in.
