First thing I do when debugging an ignition problem is check kill circuit.
Make sure your safety lanyard is properly in place. Then go back to the engine, and on the terminal strip at the power pack, locate the black/yellow stripe wire. Disconnect this and allow the pack side of the wire to "float", i.e. no connection to anything.
Try it for spark then.
Now, that pop you heard...was it mechanical or was it possibly a backfire thru the exhaust (under water)?
If it was a backfire...and if you still have no spark after disconnecting the black/yellow kill wire...I would suspect the power pack died.
The ignition system is made up of three main parts...the timer base (under flywheel), the stator (under flywheel), and the power pack. Additionally, you have your coils and plugs.
There are involved tests for each of these parts that are spelled out in the OMC service manual for your engine. There is not a good way to test the power pack, but you can do some basic resistance tests on the stator and the timer base. To do the voltage tests on these parts, you need a DVA adapter for your multimemter.
There are also checklist type debugging guides all over the i'net to guide you in a "no spark on all cyls." condition.
