Below is a add from ebay. Does anyone know what they mean? Anyone ever done it?

1972 Evinrude 100hp electric shift, 20 inch shaft, manual tilt. This is a VERY low time engine. It was brought into a marina in 1979 with an ignition problem and left. It has since been retro fit with a CDI ignition that OMC used thru the 90's. It is the least cost to maintain.

Re: ignition retro?

Dont know, ask seller the question, maybe he upgraded to a newer type ignition system, or used the coil, ballast resistor and condensor retro to automotive parts, I beleive 72 was the last year that the old type points ignition was used, of course I have been known to be wrong before:)

The capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) may not have been available on that model, dont have one and would have to check the BRP page. Retrofitting it is simply updating the ignition to the newer style CDI, like you would retrofit an outboard with a tell tale on the earlier model outboards.

That engine has a battery CD ignition system, it use's a sensor, not points. You could not update to a magneto CD, the crankshaft, and flywheel are entirely different. I would strike that engine off my list.

Yep, Prestolite battery CD system with a sensor. Distributor cap under the flywheel. Would require extremely major changes to convert to Mag CD, if it's even possible. Would almost require changing the powerhead and entire electrical system. However, if he did manage to do it, it's a better system.

Thanks for clearing it up, only conversion I had ever seen was changing to epoxy filled coil, ballast resistor to cut the voltage and a condensor.

Never seen another type done, does the add have pics of the conversion? would be interested in seeing that.
