Ignition/starter diagnosis

When starting with the key I get a dead response out of my starter. However, if I turn the key to the battery on position, and leave it there for about 1 minute before cranking, I can engage the starter. All connections have been checked and cleaned. Any suggestions what the problem might be?

Thanks

Re: Ignition/starter diagnosis

With the ignition key in the OFF position, run a small jumper wire from the "B" (battery) terminal of the switch to the "S" (solenoid) terminal of the switch.

If the starter engages immediately and every time you use that jumper.... replace the ignition switch.

What would I use as jumper wire? Would any type of electical wire do? Thanks

Re: Ignition/starter diagnosis

I would think that 16ga or 18ga wire would do nicely. The wire gauge should be big enough to carry the soleniod current, which isn't a large amount. A length of lamp cord or speaker wire should do the trick, as this is for testing only.

or just zip over to the ol radio shack and you can buy six nice jumper leads with insulated clips for about 3 dollars.
