Ignition swaping question

I have a 1972 Johnson 100ESL72R 100HP outboard motor. I do not understand this single coil/pulse pack system that they designed for this motor. It worked great for a couple of years but then I crossed up the battery cables one night while changing out a bad battery in the dark and that was the end of my ignition. This is one complicated system and I hate it. Can I replace the system with a more conventional system like you see on every other boat in the world? The price for one of these pulse pack is 300 bucks and that is just the beginning.

where have you checked for parts there are some less expensve parts out there?

I admit prices for parts in your ignition are high,but 'every other boat in the world' doesn't mean Wallyworld prices.<br /><br />1976 Mercury 175 switch box is $213.00.And it uses 2 of them.<br /><br />DHP

I checked out the CDI electronics parts last night and I think I go with their package and just replace everything. It will cost about 500.00 and they say to forget the clipper circuit. Have you had any experiance with CDI parts?

Marc I understand what you mean about those amplifer/pulse pack. I have 1969 85hp Johnson that I am not getting no spark. I have to replace the amplifer. I checked some local places and they the cost were excess of $350. I found a place in florida were I can get a new parts for $225. That is a new amplifer and a new coil. With a 2 year warrenty.

Hmm...actually, that ignition system is very reliable. But, like all modern electronics, reversing the batter connections just isn't a good idea, as you discovered.
