1987 Force 125 HP. Wondering about the various ignition parts, ie trigger, stator, coils, cd modules, etc., Will these things need to be replaced eventually. Is it not about if, but when? If so I am considering purchasing these items now while they are still available and reasonably cheap. What do you think?

Re: Ignition system parts life span

That's a difficult question to answer. If you read this forum, you will see numerous ignition component problems and failures---But that's why they are posted. People with no problems generally don't post.

Now, years ago, Chrysler came out with the Magna-Power II ignition system. This ignition was desevedly considered inferior since it regularly failed. However, many did not fail and are still functioning today. They may outlive their owners.

So: Your ignition components may fail in the future, but they may outlive both you and your engine.

As for availability, I believe they will always be found, but you may need to look harder to find them. Early Chrysler ignition components are still available if you look hard enough. I also believe that it may, in the future be possible to retro-fit to a different--read Mercury--ignition system. This was done in the past by Chrysler racers.

So: If you have money to burn and don't mind hanging onto unused parts, and if it makes you feel more secure, by all means, buy some of the most frequently failing components. Otherwise, take a chance. It's your money and your decision.

My Forces twin 88/85s never needed anything except 1 pack in the first month of ownership.
Salt water takes a toll on head gaskets.
Other than that.not much.
Look around for spare parts. That way you will never have to go far IF (IF) you need them.J

Doesn't sound to practical. If you get around to needing them, you probably won't remember where they are. Been there done that.

As these motors get older and older more will fail and put spare parts on the market....the biggest killer of engines is bad waterpump /no pisser so invest there...
