I have been reading and rereading the "seloc" manual and am getting ready to dive into ignition troubles.

I already know the stator & charge coils are bad (well they have leaked at soem point in the past) "new motor to me" & unknown history (heck I got nice Galv. trailer for $750 and it came with a '73 Manatee and this '73 Evinrude)

Plugs are fouled.

but to test the PP and primary coils the book says I need an s-80 or m-80 tester. Is this tester available or is there some work around?

top coil has a small crack (fore to aft as it is installed) presumably from what I have read this is bad or will be. primary wire (to the plug) on bottem coil is loose (again will lead to loss of spark).

compression is solid 120 top and bottom but middle is solid 60 (wet or dry on all cyl). I'm hoping a head gasket. (thinking as I write- carbs have been rebuilt, could be a bent intake reed???) I heard this motor was good for out of round middle cylinders if overheated? is boring this motor acceptable? We mostly cruise local waters and would like to occasionally tube or ski.

Sorry to ramble but I really want to get tester so I can start to cost out the repairs.

Thanks for any responses... Scott

The neon tester was the way to go back then, but better methods have been developed. Get a DVA tester.

OR, get along without it. It really isn't that complicated. Usually it is a works or don't work deal. But if you are at a dead end and can't figure it out, a DVA will help.

But the question is moot till you figure out what is wrong with that middle cylinder. The motor is notorious for the exhaust cover warping beside the exhaust ports and spraying water into the cylinder through the exhaust ports. That would pretty much destroy it.

hhhmmm... well I'll put some more effort into it after I get the Gale back in the water. If all goes well that should be this w/e coming up. planning on a tank test this week.

Thanks for your thoughts, again!
