lookin good there. we don't mind lots of stripping pix....and i like seeing the test polish.

kinda weird on that stripper.....most stripper works BETTER the hotter it gets. guess i'll avoid buying that stuff.

Started cutting some wood this morning, the front three deck sheets came out good enough to use as templates.

This is the second sheet back:

Layout



2.5" hole saw for the scallops



Then follow it around with the jig saw for the angle

Front two sheets. The bow piece was not very symmetrical so I flipped it and marked it from both sides for final fitting later.



I must not have taken a pic of the third sheet, and the stern sheet will have to be measured and cut, there wasn't anything left of it.

Next I started on this project



The old Dilly has seen better days. I welded the crack on the rear cross member, but need to find some steel for a gusset. The rollers are all shot, and the tongue was weakened when it came loose hauling dads old trihull. i'm thinking about extending the bunks back to the rear of the trailer, both to give the unsupported section of the trailer frame some more strength and give the ss a little more to sit on. Any opinions on that?

your floors came out nice. i hadn't throught of using a hole saw for the rib cutouts, i just cut em with the jigsaw at abt a 45 degree angle. you look to have gotten better results but you may have to put a bevel on your cutouts later with a 2" sanding drum on the drill so it will lay flat on ribs.

last section is easy, no curves, so you can just cut it with circ saw set for 45 deg bevel.

I know I'm kinda bouncing around here, but need some opinions on these rivets. I have replaced the 3-4 missing rivets with 10-24tpi ss bolts & locknuts covered with sealant. There are quite a few mainly attaching the keel that look like this, flush with the inside, heads look nice and tight on the outside. What does the mob say?

I am starting back working on my 1979 SS 18'. I stored it over the winter and have been pretty busy this spring to spend much time on it. I am needing to replace my transom. Did you go with marine ply or regular ply. I used regular ply on my deck and epoxy resin. Instead of building a u shaped seat in front I used 3/4 ply and build a fishing deck. I need to finish the carpet up front and install the control box yet before I tackle the transom.

hey Richard--

start a separate thread on your boat. if you can get marine ply locally, use it. if not, either the Pinochet's revenge (Arauco sanded panels from Chile, available at Lowes and Home Despot) or oak or birch ply will work fine. slather in epoxy either way, esp the end grain, and don't forget to drill a few drainage holes in the "tray" the wood portion of transom sits in

what happens when you try to move the exterior head with visegrips or gentle tapping with a chisel or sharp putty knife? i'd say that if you get no movement, leave em but rebuck and seal well with gluvit etc. if they move even slightly, i'd replace. since it looks from your location like your boat never sees salt water, the SS screw plan you've been doing is fine.

Jeff,
I used Coat It on my SS and my Jet. It works great! Being its a dark color it makes it really easy to see where you've put it. However, one word of caution. Do not buy the gallon, buy the quarts. That stuff sets up like wildfire and unless you have ten people helping you it will kick off well before you are done. Aside from that the stuff is great and a lot less expensive then typical two part epoxy.

I am planing on using the 3/4" arucou(sp?) ply covered with spar varnish for my transom.

I tried driving a few of them out from the inside, tapping lightly with a hammer and punch, no movement.
Fresh water is all my boat will see, with the fuel cost to haul this thing to salt water I could rent one when I get there.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the coat-it. I have a quart now but have not used it yet. I will plan to mix small quantities in a separate container.

Welded, patched, replaced tongue, painted, new rollers, new bunks and carpeting, LED lights, and some new bolts here and there= at least good enough to set the boat on for now.



I hope to get the bottom done and the hull flipped back over on the trailer this week (or month).

A little less turtley, I still need to drop the bunks down a little, but it fits the trailer good enough.

The strap on the back you ask, well apparently when a 240lbs guy tries to climb over the side of a bare aluminum hull, puts one foot inside the boat and sits down on the side, said hull doesn't have enough weight to counteract this force and tries to remove itself from its trailer sideways, 240lbs guy jumps inside said hull to avoid wearing an aluminum hat, and has to climb down front to escape.:facepalm:

On a better note, the floor fits.



Got the wood stringers out, and all the pop rivets drilled and holes cleaned out.



So, next on the schedule:
Clean carpet glue off inside
Clean and prepare for coat-it
Cut and seal wood stringers
Seal floor
Buy stock in pool noodle company

Need some expertise. I was planning to start applying spar varnish to my deck while cleaning the hull for coat-it. I went ahead and pulled the stringers out since half the rivets where missing anyway. Now I am thinking about adding some extra 1/2 ply under the floor for support under seats and adding a ski locker. I have some rough measurements where everything goes, but didn't want to attach anything until the stringers are back in. I am planning to glue and screw the extra supports underneath. Will PL, Titebond, or Gorilla glue stick to spar varnish finished ply or am I better off attaching the extra supports before I seal the ply?

Also, ski lockers are not cheap, I am thinking about just cutting it out of the ply and carpeting it. Any reason I need to buy a teak cover?
