I'm getting an old Yamaha 5hp

I'm totally an old Johnson & Evinrude guy but I'm buying a sailboat a long ways away and it comes with an old Yamaha 5hp. The owner told me late 80's or so. He said it worked when he last used it a year ago (don't they all say that!).

I have fairly extensive knowledge of the old Johnson/Evinrudes but know nothing about Japanese outboards.

I have attached a pic, the only one I have. Can anyone tell me anything about it. I will be driving to pick it up in a few weeks and might want to take some basic parts, like impeller, plugs(s) etc, once I get the model #.

And as you can see, it's a salty

Any input/history on this engine whether good or bad? Thanks a lot.

It would be helpful if you posted the exact model number and the country that it comes from. Those motors are long-lived and reliable. I would bring a spark plug, Yamalube 2 stroke oil, fuel filter, thermostat and impeller with me. I would also bring oil drain plug gaskets and gear oil.

you also should take a carb kit.
my experience with blow boats, blowboat owners and blow boat kickers isnt good.
wind is free and everything else outta be.
most the small blow boat kickers I see are worth about 16cents a pound.
ran good a year ago? then ask if it was properly set up for long term storage. how old is the fuel?
when was the last cooling system tune up? when was the last regular annual maint performed?
it was a solid dependable motor yet certain maint actions were required annually, most blow boat kickers only see a tech when its so bad off it cant be owner jury rigged anymore.
by then they are normally junkers.

You're not encouraging me!

I guess a 2 stroke is a 2 stroke as that sounds about the same as a Johnson or Evinrude...

Should have the model# soon.

Re: I'm getting an old Yamaha 5hp

I know nothing about the Yamaha 5 but have an aftermarket ser. manual that covers the 4 and 5.It has an interesting 2 piece crank.single cylinder NGK B7HS plug set at .020 to .024.Fuel mix is 100:1.CDI ignition.idle speed 950 to 1050.If run in salt I would wonder about the effects unless given very careful care.Between the 100:1 mix and salt there is a good chance it will be seized if not prepped and stored correctly.
The NAPA marine products catalog list only 84,85 5 hp.impeller 18-3073 available at iboats.no carb kit listed for the 5. 18-7834 fuel pump diaphram.
gearcase capacity 3.5 ozs.reccomended lube is Yamalube.Maybe someone knows if it is the same as outboard gearcase lube.

Here's a guide here although it's confusing:

Your model Yamaha is a "World" model and not a North American model. Before Yamaha began to sell Yamaha branded motors in North America there were gray market motors sold here. What country was this motor originally from? Do you have any of the maintenance records? Is this motor part of the deal?

Absolutely no history. It's attached to the back of a sailboat I'm buying. I have not physically seen it yet at all. Only pictures. A 'world' engine? Sounds like it'll be hard to get parts!

Actually it should not be hard to get parts as long as you have a parts manual for it. There are several internet web sites in Europe that list part numbers for all the common parts. They can be ordered in Canada. From the records I have seen, you have a 1980 motor. Is there a reason why you cannot find the history of this motor? What is the year of the boat? Is the owner unwilling or unable to disclose this information?

Re: I'm getting an old Yamaha 5hp

The sail boat is a '77. The current owner has only had it a year or 2 so that is my history. It last ran a year ago... So who knows when I get to it... Maybe it's seized... maybe not...
