I have a 1978 115 and really enjoy it, dependable and easy to work on. It likes gas, ALOT.

Compression, spark, look at foot lube to see if any water intrusion, check the tilt n trim if it has it, also look at the carb part numbers as many different carbs fit the ole v-4 and it may have a different set of carbs on it, anywhere from an 85hp to a 140.

Check wiring harness for corrosion, also see if there is a tell tale installed correctly.

If the compression is in the 120+ range and if it has PT&T and if it runs well, it would be worth $500. on a good day.

Otherwise, you will be well ahead to move into the 1980's.

My crossflow 115HP V4 motors run about the same on fuel, and it has nothing to do with age from 1973 through 1994. Remember that the horsepower rating system changed in 1985.

My brother has a 1975 115HP on the back of his 17ft stryker bass boat, it runs like a top.

I agree with everybody, check it from top to bottom with a fine tooth comb. I happened to buy my 78 model 85HP without doing anything but looking under the cowling, I got lucky that it just needed what the owner said it did, and this was coming from a female owner.

While there's nothing inherently wrong with the 74-77 series I agree that you'll be better off heading into the 78 and up model change. Especially considering the T&T you'll have a very hard time finding any replacement parts for that unit.

im getting the v4 for 450 with the boat i know the guy but i mont buy it
without really good comp and good oil in lower it has power trim and the paper work on the boat is good trailer is nice it is a fresh water only motor .
will probaly take the chance i will be able to recoup some funds from the boat and trailer,i will also run a spark test ,even thoughy the electronics are
availible, it has a single ram power trim that has no aparent leaks he said the last time he used it it went up but wouldnt go down with out playing with switch .i always thought the 115s of thoughs years were good motors
i had a 85 1975 that was great . im going to 115 from 150 so i hope the gas milage is better. how do yall think it will run .compared to the 150
thanks bennyb

I think that you will be very pleasantly surprised at what that engine can do, given the lighter weight and higher compression.
