im new to boating and need some help

I took my first boat 1988 chaparral 2300sx out and got it on plane but it would not steer and made a clicking noise. I slowed down to idle speed and it would turn wat could b the problem. Idont even know what type steering it has. it has a power steering pump like a car and some sort of hydraulic ram or something

If you turn the wheel and the drive doesn't turn there is obviously a steering problem. Is there a belt on the pump? Is the fluid level proper? Are there leaks in the system? We can't see your boat so you need to examine the system from the helm to the stern.
