JB Weld seems to be well liked for many scratches & holes

NOT Bondo

Tractors & boats go good together.

Drill out the rivets holding the end caps on at both ends of the gunwales. Check how much coverage they give you to confirm you can cut 1.625" (1 5/8ths) +/- off the end of the gunwale's tin. You might be able to bend it up out of the way, but it will probably crease the metal & that crease will likely remain when you try to bend it back.

I'm with you all the way, but trying to figure out the exact location you are removing the 1.625 off of. Any chance you could send me a pic of that?

I will send pics of her rear end tomorrow if that helps.. (me)

Uber thanks.

He might be talking about this

I drilled out my transom brackets and used a dremel with a cutoff wheel. I replaced the transom wood and just pounded the metal back down. The cap covered and no crease(where i bent it back) showed.

Just take a pencil and trace the shape of the cap before you drill it out/off...then you'll know how far you can cut/bend.

We often use both: The Admiral & SWMBO (she who must be obeyed:rolleyes:)

I have previously referred to mine as The Warden in deference to her keeping tabs on me & my projects:facepalm: I'm sure if she was aware, she'd definitely prefer Admiral:)

Nice job on the negotiating! I'd of probably forked over the extra $50 as once the "new boat" smell gets in my nose I tend to lose my will power.

I'll be looking forward to seeing how your new project turns out.

Thanks Jason, I put water muffs on the OB and water would not come out the top pee-hole (Mercury 70 1989). In fact the alarm went off on the throtle controller (over heating?). I shut it off but hope I didn't fry it. Crap.. what do you think this '69 boat is worth with no motor..? Prob $500 here in MI.

I have another thread on the engine.

Sippin, nice deal.

If the alarm went off and you shut it down, no harm should be done. Time to put a new impeller or water pump in the LU. Pretty simple and not too pricey. You will want to drop it to see how the housing and plate look before ordering just the impeller.

Good luck

Thanks, I really like this boat (been making extra trips outside just to take a look at it:)
I have been trying to drop the LU since yesterday. Read and searched online at how simple it is.. but it will not drop. I am not opposed to buying an OEM manual and read the one iboat sells is somewhat ok.. I removed the 4 main bottom bolts and the one above the prop and it will not budge. tapped it with a rubber mallet.. read there is a cotter pin on the shifter shaft near the top and I do not see it there.. If your familiar with this 3 banger, feel free to throw me a line.

great deal on the boat and you'll be glad you did the transom. Yeah you'll have to keep an eye on the Admiral for signs of boat fatigue, I almost got "the look" when I told her I ordered all new steering for the nassua but I added "at least it didn't happen out in the water" bob and weave LOL good luck and welcome

I've used "The Fun Governor". ....only under my breath though. lol

We've got a really good Merc forum here. Sounds like you need an impeller. Get the manual first, it'll save you some heartache. Impellers are easy, peasy, lemon squeazy. That is after you do one, first one it's whaaat??? I'll check youtube, maybe some kind soul has posted a how to.

Drove it to the shop, he said I just needed to use putty knife and wedges to separate the LU. Worked out great, new impeller installed. P-strem is good. Ty!
