impellar replacement not working

HELP!!!! we replaced the impellar on our 1970 johnson outboard motor and its still not pulling water up. don't know where to go next. other than this the motor is running well. Was told if its in the water it will be ok, don't want to blow up the motor.

welcome to iboats.

You need to drop the lower unit and make sure the new impellar is still in one piece and then carefully re-assemble. You may have missed the water tube seating properly.

Need to know what motor your working on. Are you trying to run it on muffs? Some motors are not designed to run on muffs. They need a special attachment or to be in a barrel.

i was given a 1967 Evinrud Fastwin needs a new impellar is that easy to install. And I'm really new at this forum stuff so I hope someone see's this and can help me out. I don't want to mess this motor up so any advice will be greatly helpfull.

First thing is run a piece of weedeater line in the telltale & see if its pluged.

Are you sure the key stayed in place when you installed the new impellar???

In order for you to get the best advice you need to tell us what hp motor. 1970 covers a slew of Johnsons. Next make sure that you are testing this motor with plenty of water - - this means on the muffs or whatever or while the lower unit is completely submerged. A bucket don't cut it. Check this before you go nuts fixing stuff.

well.....without knowing all the info I am going to go with the water jacket tubes are not installed properly.

Looking at the evinrude site it looks like that year motor can use muffs. So I'm voting improper installation with the other. I'm thinking your going to need to tear it back apart and and check the key, tubes and the pump assembly.
