I'm replacing the impeller in my '76 OMC. I want to confirm if I have the impeller blades going in the right direction. I took a pic of it when I took it apart, but somehow managed to delete it.

When looking at the impeller in the housing with the stainless plate up, should the blades be curving to the right or to the left?

take the top of the pump and hold it against the top of impeller then trun your input shaft clockwise until pump top seats, put bolts back in

By 'pump top' I assume you mean the impeller housing? If so, i think I've got it right. :D There's no pic in my manual for this step so I just wanted to make sure I was reading it right. Thanks! :D

This pick should help. Mine is a OMC 83' but the impeller housing I believe looks the same. This was my old impeller before I took it out. Look at the fins, that is the direction they should be pointing.

Thanks Manipulator! I did have it in right! :D Yep, my housing's same as yours. My old impeller looked in great shape too, considering it's AT LEAST 16 yrs old!

Would you believe me if I told you that impeller has over 500 hours on it? I had to take my drive apart anyway so I put a new impeller and pump housing in. You're right, really didn't need to be replaced.

ok, I have a dumb question,as per the picture of the houseingand impeller.
should you run a piece of fine sand paper on the side walls
to clean it up for the new impeller?

You could clean it up some, looks to be a little aluminum erosion. I would just replace it like I did. You can pay a little extra (not much) and the kit comes with the pump housing and new cover.
