Impeller Key

Hey<br />I just put a impeller in my 14 SPL Evinrude.<br />Man getting the key in, took some time.<br />Now I've got the impeller housing bolted down.<br />Hopefully the key didn't come off the shaft.<br />The housing bolted down ok.<br />Could the key somehow sliped out,and still bolt down to the housing?<br />This is my first impeller job.<br />But the old impeller didn't look all that bad,for 17 years of use.<br />Also in the kit the impeller housing plate was black iron.<br />My motor had what looked like was a stainless steel impeller housing plate.<br />I put my old one back on with a new gasket. <br />What do ya'll think?<br /> Thanks

If you fell resistance when you turn the drive shaft by hand, you probably got it in OK.<br /><br />That's not black iron. It's painted stainless alloy. Supposed to make the impeller slip around easier.....until the paint wears off. Did the old plate have grooves in it from the impeller?

Yep the old one had grooves in the plate,next to the shaft.And I used permatex on all the gaskets.<br />Read last night that some gaskets shouldn't have sealent on them,too late now.<br />Hope everything works,will find out latter today. <br />Thanks for the reply.

Impeller key.... The trick is to have the driveshaft in your left hand hand, apply a little grease on the area where the key goes and place the key on it. Now, slide the impeller onto the key.<br /><br />With the impeller now in place, hold the fingers of your right hand under the impeller, slide the water pump impeller housing down onto the impeller while turning the driveshaft with your right hand in a counter clockwise motion.<br /><br />With the plate already installed on the lower unit, simply slide the driveshaft and the housing/impeller unit into the lower unit as an assembly.
