The motor has sat up for a long time but is in good shape. when I started it no water was pumping so I ordered an impeller. I followed the directions in the service manual but I can't get the lower gear housing to drop more than about 1/4" & can't get to the cotter key & pin to disconnect the shift linkage. Does anyone know if maybe its just stuck from sitting up so long or should I seperate the linkage further up where it bolts together? This is forward & reverse thread & doesnt want to break loose but I didn't try to hard b/c it doesn't say to do this in the service manual. I also don't want to beat on it b/c it's cast aluminum. I'm at a loss & Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my first boat & motor so it's all new to me lol but I know I'm very close to bein in the water!!!

Is your L/U similar to my 1970 35 hp Chrysler?s? If so I had two options to get it to drop.

1. Disconnect the coupling outside the leg that has to be centered correct to get F, N,R, gears.
2. To avoid the centering I started pulling the cotter pin at the shift rod (tight but works).

It sounds as if your splines might be holding you if that is all the drop you are getting. What pics can you share? Such as: showing the full motor and drop, Pic of instructions and parts diagram.

I will try to see in the motors are related, if there is a retainer holding the shaft and if the coupling is not the key to dropping if you can not get to the cotter pin.

Otherwise, I feel direct experience to this yr model and matter will help you soon. How long has the motor been sitting,, used in salt or fresh water and other helpful past history.

Re: Impeller replace on 1983 25hp Chrysler

Here are some motor pics. I just bought the motor & not sure how long it sat up or how many hours are on it. It's been in a barn for many years & looks like it was hardly ever used. It didnt run when i bought it but Before I bought it I checked the compression which was 95 in both cylinders. I got it home, got new spark plugs (still had original in it) & set the points & it started right up but never pumped water so I ordered an impeller & now I'm stuck lol. Im in southeast Louisiana so I'm sure it's been in fresh & salt water. I'm sending pics of the shift link coupling that I think ur talking about. I had the same thought but that thing didn't want to break loose. It looks like the top rod has a standard thread & the bottom has reverse thread so I stopped before I broke something & it doesn't say to do that in the service manual

Sorry I don't know how to post pics. I tried to put pics of the manual too. It said 1. Remove motor leg covers 2. Remove 2 top shock mounts 3. Remove side & front shock mounts 4. Tilt motor back & lock anti reverse 5. Remove 4 bolts from lower gear housing & pull down housing 6. Remove cotter key & shift linkage pin & housing will fall down.

I can't pull it down far enough to see the cotter pin

Fill out the profile? Location? You might be close to someone who can help?
Sometimes shifting the gears will drop the lower unit a bit?
Take pic with phone, sent to your e-mail,then save to your pics.
Then go to the "go advanced" tab and follow directions for uploading?

Did you try running ?Deep? in a 55 gal barrel simulating lake?s water level on the leg? This means instant water or no water with my 35hp.

Running it might help the splines to come down if they are holding. OR! Is there a way to get some penetrating oil to the spline?s area only?
