Impeller replacement glycerin and grease

Hello,

I am going to replace the impeller in my 1999 Volvo Penta 4.3 GL and the manual I have calls for glycerin for the Impeller housing and Volvo Penta Grease on the o-ring. My question is what specific grease are they referring to, and is there a cheaper/more accessible substitute for the Volvo Penta Grease? Why not just use the glycerine that came with the impeller kit? Thanks!

Both Volvo and Mercruiser call for their own grease, and it seems each call-out is a different type of grease.

I have used a single marine grease for everything with no adverse effect.

On impeller case internals if often use dish soap for the initial break-in.

I agree any grease is fine. On the impeller it's using the glycerin because it's non toxic/bio degrading. I use grease on that on my diesels or dish soap or whatever lubricant I have around as the Volvo impeller for that doesn't come eith the glycerin packet... don't over think it imo.

I just use the same glycerin for the o-ring. No issues. It’s just to lube it for assembly.

Some went through the system, some is stuck to the impeller.

Out the water exhaust….
One thing I do before spring start up is disconnect the raw water intake hose @ the thermostat housing and fill it with water and some dawn dish soap which puts that mixture into the impeller housing to lube it after sitting all winter in storage….then reconnect the hose hook up your muffs and start up….

KY jelly works (water soluble). bacon grease works (water soluble), hand lotion from your wifes purse works.... WD40 works.... can also use soap. dont overthink it.

When ever I need to lube rubber material products or O rings, I reach for Dow 111 valve lubricant. Easy to find and specifically made for rubbery stuff. It is a very sticky silicone lube, is not easily flung off, and is good for these types of material. Used this stuff for over 30 years and have never had a negative experience with this stuff. It is also a diaelectric so excellent on battery terminals and electrical connections.

Have since switched over to one of the many silicon greases market for use on swimming pools.

Very similar in texture and stickiness to Dow 111 but at a quarter of the cost.

Dow products were expensive, but have came down considerably in my area. About half the cost today as it was 30 years back. Where you live can mean a lit when it comes to cost...
