Hello all,
I have a '68 Johnson 40hp electrimatic, and was wondering how do i test to see if the impeller is working without having to tear it apart & visually check it?

It's more about time since replacement than any visual. When was it last changed? Every 2 seasons is fine for recreational use motors. I've thrown away too many good impellers after 2 years too.

Not really sure about history of the motor, just picked up boat & motor over the weekend for cheap & trying to get it up & running. When turning the motor over, the prop doesn't move but water in the tub is moving.

If it is a new motor to you, replace it. And then every few years after that.

For my peace of mind would check impeller cond specially if buying a second hand OB which don't know nothing about what previous owner has done to the OB.

Ended up taking it apart to find PO put in new impeller, but lost halfmoon key needed for it. Built new key and now it works. Gonna order new key & a few other pieces i want to change later.
