I am replacing my impeller and i have a question.

Alpha I Gen II

the seal that slides down the drive shaft and goes on top of the water pump housing. Does it just sit on top or should the bottom lip of the seal go between the shaft and the housing? It apprears to be very diffucult to get it to seat. Please provide any advice. Thanks in advance!!!!!

Re: impeller

Yes, it just sits down on the top of the housing. Not too tight either. There is a special tool for setting the face seal (as it is know) in the Merc impeller kits that have the impeller, gaskets, plate, and seals.

Re: impeller

The indention about half way up the seal (narrow PT) should be where the driveshaft and waterpump housing meet? That is the best i can explain it

Re: impeller

I am about to do this too. My directions say to only slide that seal about half way down, not to move it all the way down to the top of the cover. Did I read this incorrectly?

Mine is an alpha I gen II too.

I am just waiting to find some alternative to the quicksilver perfect seal before I start, as I have gone to four marine stores and can't buy it. I am now looking for either the permatex aviation seal or loctite aviation seal, as I think these are the closest thing I can buy locally. The guy at the one marine store said to use plane old contact cement -- that is why I am doing this myself.

Re: impeller

Sorry for my questions, I re-read the section and now understand better.

7. Assemble the water pump face seal to a position approximately 1/2 of the way down the drive shaft. Assemble the water pump face seal setting tool over the drive shaft and push the seal down onto the water pump with the tool while pulling up on the drive shaft. Remove the tool from the drive shaft.
