I am kinda new to outboard motors, but I have been collecting a few as of late. I picked up a 56 johnson 7.5 hp that runs excellent, but when I ran it in a barrel with water I did not see any water coming from the water pump port. This also has happened on 62 5.5 Johnson and a 63 evinrude 5.5 hp. Is this very common on these or am I doing something wrong ?
The impeller on all three of these require powerhead removal and am waiting for parts, but I really did not want to do a 3rd one now. It just seems odd that all three had the same problem. I would expect at least one of them to pump water...lol

depends on how long they have been sitting and how long since the last time they were changed, i usually change them every year, regardless............ call it a cheap insurance policy

Are they being submerged far enough in the water? Needs to be over the intake port holes on the side of the lower unit, and also the pointed fin that sticks off the back. Pulls water from two locations. They are all older motors, it is very possible it is a coincidence.

They should be submerged to within a couple of inches of the exhaust port on the exhaust housing.

Beek you were exactly right I had been submerging the motor just above the intake and apparently the intake needs a little more head pressure.
I submerged the motor to about 2 inches below the outlet pipe and it pumps water very well.

Thank you

Regardless of whether they work, if you don't know when the impellers were last changed out, I would recommend that you do them anyway. It's cheap insurance!
