I have a 45hp and I used to have a 70 hp. The 45's impeller, from a merc dealer, goes by the brand "QuickSilver". It has 6 blades. The 70, wich sank to the bottom of the lake and was, damaged, had a impeller with about 12 blades. The blades, or fins were totally differnt in design. I've been told that I could get an impeller for the 45 with the 12 fins like the 70 had but no one seems to know where. I've ordered impellers fron a couple of different places and still wind up with the QuickSilver impeller. Anybody got any help for me?

Re: Impellers

The advantage of more vanes is that they prime the pump better. But vanes take up space. Impellers with fewer vanes actually pump more water because that area where another vane would be now contains water instead. In most cases, the pump is well underwater when the boat is started and doesn't need priming. On applications where the pump is always close to the surface, even at rest (like a pontoon), then the impeller with more vanes might be more desirable.

I haven't researched it, but there might only be one option offered these days.

Re: Impellers

hello
in its heyday chysler offered some racing impellers. but after some changes in ownership merc droped it. I think your stuck. the racing versions had different pump housings as well and ran on a 25-1 fuel oil mix.
its kinda funny remembering racing chyslers :) :)

I loved that racing Chrysler with the exhaust funnels coming off the side of the block....Has anyone ever actually seen one?

Re: Impellers

Yeah. A customer had one on a speedboat of some sort. He was using it more as a skiboat, but it kept blowing head gaskets. We kept replacing them and he kept blowing them. We finally called and got somebody that was very familiar with them and he said that they were made to run full out. Idling around would blow them for sure. And it did. It had to do with cylinder porting and there was nothing to do about it. The owner also got several warnings about excessive noise when it did run.

Re: Impellers

This is the 3084 and is the impeller you are refering to 3084
I have tried using these on my 45 HP chrysler and dont even get a season out of them till they bust. I would stick with the 6 blade which is this one 3065

Eurolarva your the man for coming up with the parts. Racing Chryslers eh? And we are told our engines are under rated. :)

Euro: Yup, the 3084 is the one I was referring to. In the 70 horse, that one lasted quite a long time...the guy I got the engine from had the engine 7 years and never replaced it. When I fished the engine up from the bottom of the lake and parted it out, the impeller looked great. The Quicksilver impellers last about one season (sometimes less) for me. I think if the shafts were the same diameter, I'd have used it in the 45, but, it wouldn't fit

Re: Impellers

This has turned into a very interesting thread. Can I use the 6 blade 3065 in my 1970 554HA? It came with the 3084. The 3065 looks a lot cheaper.

Scotiany, The 6 blade is what I've been using in a 76 457HF. I've been told that the 35, 45 and 55, hp lower units are the same.

Re: Impellers

Hey scotiany. The impellers with the brass type nut are more expensive but as far as I am concerned they dont last any longer. The lower unit I am currently using is off a 55HP lower unit and the six blade impeller works just fine on it. I paid around 14 dollars for my impeller.
