what is the symtoms of bad impeller. In a car if water leaks in the water pump meaning you need a new pump. But in marine engine is a procedure to check if impeller is working properly. your ideas are highly appreciated.Thank you.

Re: impleller

In the stern drive there is a rubber impellor.
If this goes then the temperature will rise quickly above its norm. The norm will vary from engine to engine anywhere between 140-170.
I have had a bad one where only 2 of the 6 blades were left and you get a hot rise when idling and lowers when cruising.
It is an easy job to do if you need to(assuming a Mercruiser unit).
A good thing to do is to look at the temp when you get all this squared away running properly and see the trend for your motor. This will help in the future.
As for the pump on the engine if it leaks cannot advise although someone here will.
Good luck hth

The water pump is in your engine like on a car. It will leak or create a whining noise like on a car too. The impeller, as mentionned above, is in your drive. On my OMC Cobra it is very easy to change. Here's a layout of where it is on a cobra:(see no. 24)

http://www.sterndrive.info/id26.html

I recommend changing the impeller every other year and you will never need to know what signs to look for and NEVER turn the ig key without the water running to the o/d already and ALWAYS turn off the motor before turning off the water.(when on land that is)Charlie
