yeah....

get one.

Just do it, don't let anyone tell you that one is not needed. Don't let the price if money is an issue and you are having someone install it for you, make you not get one. They are important and EVERY boat with a engine should have one. Even a little 9.9.

how important are they if you are not running ethanol blended fuel? there is one place here that doesnt have ethanol fuel, and I ALWAYS go there for the cars and the boat. Should I still have one?

for the cost I would say get one anyway....I think I got my racor 10 micron filter for between $60 and $70....if you have enough excess fuel line the cost of the filter and a couple of clamps and you are done in 1/2 hour. You could still get water in from your tank vent and condensation....and the extra filtration is always welcome anyway. Although that being said, my boat is an 86 which I bought just last year with original 86 yamaha outboard which spent the first 22 years of its life without one.....although I did need to get the carbs rebuilt

They are cheap insurance. I ordered one a while back. Here it is. Only $20 for the unit and then a few more $ for fittings.

Does anyone have a story of what happened for not using a water separator? My boat motor is 36 years old and it did not have a water separator when I bought it. I assume it never did. It runs great. What can be the effects of not having one?

not me, since i don't have one either. so far, w/o ramifications too. i suppose my day will come. but so far, since 1976 or so, with my dads boat (abused boat, no such thing as pm) that didn't have one and now my boat that don't have one (had it for 3 years now and done lots of boating with it). we've not experienced any issues... suppose it's just luck. but i'll take it.. at this time. i don't have planes to put one on. i don't think dad does either. he died a few years ago so i don't think he cares one way or the other anymore.....
i also use non ethanol fuel. i also store topped off, usually.
